[solved] A forum for Ultimate Smash Friends ?

[solved] A forum for Ultimate Smash Friends ?

Postby xapantu » 04 Mar 2010, 18:02

Hi all,
I introduced Ultimate Smash Friends in this topic : http://forum.freegamedev.net/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=103

The project needs now a forum to speak about graphics, is it possible to have one forum on Freegamedev ?

It would be great because we can't have a forum only for us ;)

All the code of game is under GPL and all media files are under a Creative Commons license (except maybe for musics ? I am not sure for them).

These are a screenshot of the game :

I like the visual progress you have made.

It is possible in general, however let us just clarify if there is no option you would prefer.

You say that "we can't have a forum only for us" - I suppose you mean that the forum would be too empty, if you set it up on your tuxfamily page? Or does Tuxfamily not want to host a forum? Or do you not want to have to administer the forum (fully understandable). If you would prefer to have an own forum and FGD is just a way out, you could also register the project at http://sf.net , they offer phpbb forums (although sf.net as a host often is slow..)

you could use http://groups.google.com - http://groups.google.com/group/racer-dev and http://groups.google.com/group/violetland and http://groups.google.com/group/openmw do it.

You could also ask http://opengameart.org for a subforum (I don´t know the admin´s policy on hosting project forums, but I assume it might be possible). It might be better to be at OGA, since they are art-centered, on the other hand FGDForums are much nicer than OGAForums at this moment in my humble opinion. :D

Knowing all this, do you still want a "Ultimate Smash Friends Art" forum here? ("Art", so it can be gfx and sfx). Or just "Ultimate Smash Friends" so everything can be discussed? I don´t want to say "go away", I just want to make sure that you are aware of the alternatives and pick the best for now. :)

What do other people think? I know that nobody wants to host an empty forum but as I understand there are already people who want to talk about the art in the game.

USF is now nearly 1 year old: http://code.google.com/p/ultimate-smash ... detail?r=1 and there are 3 committers: http://code.google.com/p/ultimate-smash-friends/ It does seem to be able to profit from a forum. Anybody against?

PS: The exact licenses would be interesting to know, not all CC licenses are free as in freedom etc. :)

I will reply later for others questions (no time now ;) and I am going to ask others team members) but :

It is the old home of USF : the new one is now at launchpad : https://launchpad.net/ultimate-smash-friends
6 commiters : 131 commits
There is also an irc room (on freenode) now : #usf-game.
We have also a mailing-list but it isn't very good to speak about art :?

All of that reasons : I can set a forum on tuxfamily but we can't administer the forum. Another reason is that FGD is well-known and If we made a forum for only for USF, no-one will take a look to it :)

Just in case someone thinks there is something bad about this: This is a fully potent argumentational point in my book. Administering communities requires more than just a little work: spam, updates, spam, installation, spam, moderation, spam... I absolutely recommend for example not to use own hosting and instead rely on sf.net or tuxfamily.org or icculus.org I am also close to the point of thinking that google groups might be the least-effort-way of having a kind-of-forum.

Some hints on how to promote the forum, once it exists ;)
1. Add a link to it in the happypenguin page about it and every thread you created about the project (if you have a list)
2. Post one update specifically about the forum, mentione the forum in a few posts after that and now and again, when posting about art
3. Create a link on the main link bar on the page. (by the way, you could also put a link to http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=usf-game there)

Hi, I'm the main dev of usf, thanks for your replies :)

The sub forum is an idea we had to get a little visibility and allow less technical people to learn of the project and contribute easier to the project, because I'm not great at managing a community and talking of what we do ^^'. As you have a "hosted project" section and something like a community here ;) we may use that, and hoppefully pay back by getting you more attention and more people here ^^.

Anyway, the various pointer you gave are really interresting too, and I think we will try to have feedbacks and contributions from opengameart too :) (although their "featured art" is far from exiting :/).

It would be possible to speak about anything, although I tend to prefer mailing lists and irc for code/debugs, forums just seems to me more fitted to artists (I may be wrong ^^).

About licences, the game code is GPL3, all graphics are CC-BY-SA, and the only musical contribution I had is CC-BY-SA-NC (wich is not *completly* free, I know, but it's the best I got from the person who offered the music).

cheers ;).

I think also that the best name of the forum would be Ultimate Smash Friends (if you are right, of course ! )
