Advertise YOUR [F[L]]OSS project in my [F[L]]OSS project.

Postby dusted » 16 Sep 2010, 01:37

Okay, I'm working on the next release of my most awesome puzznic remake, wizznic ( http://sf.net/projects/wizznic ), and I've got and offer to make:
If you create a funny/witty commercial graphics for your project, I'll include it as a trailing image in one or more (if more "commercials" are provided) of the levels in my game.

Basically, your image will be displayed when the player completes the level to where it's attached.

So the player completes a level, and gets some image shown with some text, "This level was sponsored by XYZ project" or "XYZ project really liked this puzzle" or whatever..

Here's a mockup I've made, for Linux.

Well, you get the idea :)
I'd ofcause be glad if you'd link back to my project in some way, but I don't really care, just thought it'd be a funny way to add some content to my own game, and maybe help others out in the process..

I included the .xcf for the mockup in case you'd like to use that as a base, but it's not required to use that.

Requirements:
320x240px, .png and I'd appreciate the source .xcf (gimp native format) if possible, but that's not required.
Your project must be under a GPL compatible (or free'er) license. (Like wtfpl)

Thank you :)
I would like to see that, if done properly/creatively, it could athmosphere and a sense of community to the games I believe.

I made one for Free Siege.
What do you think? (especially, are my sentences good? I'm not sure these are correct english sentences.)

@MCMic: It looks good. The expression would be something more like "the assault has begun".

@dusted: This is a brilliant idea! I need to pass this along to the folks over at my project... it's so crazy and experimental, they might just love it! XD

This would be specially cool with games intended to have advertises (I'm thinking about Speed Dreams, which is about to release it's 2.0.0 version). In the tracks there's already fictional advertises, and thouse could advertise FOSS games and maybe other FOSS "things".

Yeah, maybe there should be some database containing FOSS game banners?
Still trying to figure a way to put them in my game?

MCMic: Good concept, although I wonder why this castle isn't being used.

Edward Lii: Beautiful!

PS: the things I added to the banner are made by me and cc0/pd-licensed and thus compatible with GPL (you may relicense if you want)

Also I recommend using the .xcf.bz2 file format that gimp uses! much less space waste! :)

Here a version in xcf.bz2 with "the assault has begun".

qubodup : the castle on the ad is the one on the title screen of freesiege. For the castle ingame, I prefer the actual one to the one you linked, partly because it fit with the title screen, and also because I think it just look better. (and it fits 3D renders for character sprites, which seems to be what will be done).
But we should not discuss that here ^^

By the way, I started playing wizznic, the game is really great! I'm at level 30.
But why does it use 50% of my CPUs at zoom 2? And is too slow to be enjoyalbe at zoom 3.
It uses 20% of CPU with no zoom, zoom should not increase CPU use that much!

raptorus: Please can you fix 'to' to 'too'? We should aspire to have correct English. ;)

Also capitalize EightK, it'll look better.

I think the text for the eightk banner is not fitting, because it has nothing to do with game overs. at the same time it seems like a great idea to have 'failing too hard? maybe you should play X instead' ads in game over screens :D

im confused.....

first, this ad is showed when you already beat the level.

@qubodup

why so serious?
Lets think the "right way":
We are now the player. ok?

We beat the level.
We see the advertisement, it says "you lose" you think:
"WTF??? I beat it! You stupid game!"
You click next, and you see the next level, you surprised, you stop, you think:
"the advertisement was kidding me, and I believe it.
Cool advertisement, Im stupid, game is cool"
