Open Source Carmageddon :)

Open Source Carmageddon :)

Postby svenskmand » 23 Jul 2010, 01:09

I just found this project where a guy is reimplementing Carmageddon from scratch in XNA but reusing all materials from the original Carmageddon :), the guy says that he will release its source when it is done (he says that in the comments on this YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBUbWGTx0C0). Here is the first blog post he made about the game: http://blog.1amstudios.com/2009/04/carmageddon-xna.html and you can read about it all up to the currently last blog post: http://blog.1amstudios.com/2010/07/new- ... hicle.html it looks very promising, and very complete already :) and there is allot of videos to show it off :) Then hopefully when he is done someone will port his code so it will be cross-platform :)

Port it from XNA? You'd have to re-write it from scratch

XNA is essentially a programming language on its own, developed by Microsoft to run on XB360 and windows. Making it cross platform would mean re-writing it in another programming language.

There's MonoXNA, which according to its roadmap seems not usable yet.

Why? It is using the MIT license which is a free software license.

Patents and the insidious presence of Microsoft are a bit of a barrier though :P

.Net/Mono is a rabid beast cursed with M$-specific limitations and sh*t. XNA isn't much better. Remember that, kids.
My gamedesign blawg!
<remaxim>well, it is called freegamedev... means you develop games for other people for free xD

As long as he is releasing it as open source it can always be ported to a better language :)

A lot of the work he is doing can be reused: he has reverse engineer the packing of the media files, reimplemented the physics and the AI, and so on. So that should be useful for someone porting his code.

The code is now open sourced and the cease and desist letters from Square Enix is not at worry anymore due to a name change :) Now the game just needs to be ported to some open source platform, i.e. not .NET and XNA, but something open :)

I just wanted to say that they are making a new Carmageddon called Reincarnation :), and hopefully they will re-release C1, Splat Pack and C2 so they can run natively on modern hardware :D See here for more info.

Also Stainless (the developer of C1, SP and C2) have contacted the author of OpenC1, so if we are really lucky they will collaborate and release a new binary for good old C1 and SP with updated graphics, see this post for more info :D
