Newton Adventure 1.9: 2d rotating platformer

Newton Adventure 1.9: 2d rotating platformer

Postby devnewton » 06 Mar 2013, 10:26

I made a new release of my game, Newton Adventure, a 2d game which try to combine a classic platformer gameplay and physical elements: in addition of classic walk and jump moves, the player can rotate the levels at 360° giving the game a taste of Super Mario and Monkey Ball mix.

Features:

  • 30 levels.
  • 5 themed worlds (jungle, vatican, arctic, volcano, egypt) playable in any order.
  • free ( BSD and CC-BY-SA ).
  • level editor included.
  • run on Linux, Macosx and Windows.
  • deb and rpm packages.

Future and possible contributions

I'm looking for help to improve the game:

  • translation
  • packaging for linux distributions or macosx.
  • new levels and mods (creating a mods is simple, just copy some files).
  • port on smartphone, tablet or console.

The game works like a charm!
But the installer causes the "maybe the installation wasn't successful" message. (on a Windows 7 64-Bit System with Java 7 installed)
EDIT: Any plans on implementing translation? Is there a specific library you want to use? For now the (menu) font seems to be part of the images.

I have the same problem on my 64 bits Window 7. I also noticed that short creation is not working on Window XP: I use http://izpack.org/ to create the windows/universal installer. A new major version will be released this year, I hope it will solve this problems.

I'm working on translation support ( http://devnewton.bci.im/projects/newton ... e/timeline ) . French, spanish and russian are planned and I will add more if I found people who talk other language!

I made a german translation.
But:
  • I didn't know what Quest total was made for, so i let it out.
  • Also I didn't write non-ASCII characters using backslashes like in the french translation. Not 100% sure about this, but it should work anyway, given that the files are UTF-8 encoded.
Also some annotations about the homepage:
  • Please use links! I found the How To Build page in All Wiki Links.
  • Use another color scheme, please. Grey is pretty depressing in combination with black and white only. Be motivated by the fact that even gnu.org is more appealing to most viewers. :p
  • And most important: The fossil repository download link shown on the How To Build page includes the www directory, with ~500 MB for packed versions. :? That's ~600 MB complete, which takes about 2 hours given the miserable transmission rate of max. 2MBit of my internet connection.

Thank you!

I'll take a look this week end and take care of the utf8 to escaped ISO-8859-1 conversion. Because of some java classic WTF, translation files cannot be written in utf8 :-(

Please use links! I found the How To Build page in All Wiki Links.

I hoped that people would find it easily :-( From the main page, click on Contribute, then click on BuildHowTo.

To make it more user friendly, from where do you think it should be linked?

Use another color scheme, please.

This is the less ugly fossil theme :-) This obviously need some work!

miserable transmission rate of max

A server migration is planned this year.

Did you use fossil clone command or the http download link?

That's weird for sure. Since UTF-8 is total standard and no excuse, what is the name of the property loading library? Only to make sure I'll never use this :!: by accident, you know...

I'd expect it the Contribute link in the menu bar, but then again I'm spoiled. ;)

I used fossil.
There's a little misunderstanding I guess. I meant, not the server is slow (to be honest I can not know), but my connection. But I can't help it at the moment. And there are more people with a bad internet connection.
So please don't pack the www directory into the standard fossil download path.

BTW: I played around with the CSS file. Result is attached.
I think, there is still room for improvement and I didn't test it on more than one device, but at least it's not grey decorated with more grey any more.

It's a good start! If you have good CSS skills, the fossil team will welcome your work, if it could make all fossil repository good looking!

The www directory is versioned by fossil. I dont know how to make it excluded from zip download or repository cloning.

I'm no web designer. So while i could do the CSS files for some of the pages, it wouldn't look much better than this.

It looks as if everything is in one repository. Is it possible to have a seperated rep for the web stuff?

Sure, but what I like about fossil is simplicity and integration of everything I need to code, document, release and host a project.

There is three way to get the source code of Newton Adventure:

  • Using the fossil clone command, a big download (>600 mo) on the first time, then fossil update, smaller downloads to get latests versions.
  • Using the source release on the download page. About 25mo each time.
  • Using the fossil files link to get a big (>600 mo) zip each time. Maybe I should forbid this one? :p

No, because that would annoy people who can't install fossil.
I just found out, that there's a possibility to download single files of the repository, so that's ok i guess.

Quest total means the sum of level scores. Levels are grouped in themed quests: egypt, arctic, volcano...

Completed that. Also, the file is now saved as ISO 8859-1, so you don't need the escapes, according to the link to Stackoverflow.
