Proland is a C++/OpenGL library for the real-time rendering of multi-resolution terrains (up to whole planets), the real-time management and edition of vector data (representing for instance roads or rivers), the rendering of atmosphere and clouds, the rendering and animation of the oceans, and the rendering of forests. All data are loaded or generated on the fly according to the viewpoint, and can be combined procedurally. For instance the shape and texture of a terrain can be modified using vector data representing roads and rivers.
Now that i think of it, this seems well suited towards SuperTuxKart. The terrain editor supports road placement already. could be perfect for in game creation of race track's. Could share custom tracks online via a coordinate system or something so that all custom tracks are built on a planet.

Looks nice... but I can't think of a good use except a boring flight simulator
Edit: They seem to support vector based terrain stuff also, e.g. country borders and so on, so maybe it could be turned into a really fancy RISK type of strategy game

How about a real time strategy, or racing game where you can construct your own tracks in game, or a role playing game or tactical fps(battlefield like), space trading game etc there's lots of possibilities for something like this. the fact you cant see them is quite surprising tbh.

for most of those ideas you mentioned this is way to large scale and you would have to make a totally separate close scale stuff... in which case you might as well use a skybox :-/ This will take a fast GPU, so unless you really utilize it well for large scale views, it's a complete waste of resources.

There's plenty of potential uses.
Games like Pioneer are already trying something similar and could learn a lot or even use it directly. Games like Vega Strike want this kind of feature too.
Not sure why but a 3D transport tycoon was the idea that hit my brain as I was watching the videos.
Btw, I fixed the youtube links so now the videos embed.

Wow, it's amazing I think you should also post at Blender community, for example BlenderNation...
