Y8Y2 - Infection Simulation [release 24 oct]

is it okay to teaser an open source project? i have been working on this for about a month and haven't told anyone
(well, except my wives but i do not think they care much).

and i will go crazy soon if i do not get show it. but on the other hand, i know most of you will probably only give it one click. okay, maybe *you* might try it again
after a couple of weeks.

but first impressions count. so behold:

'Pandemic' the board game *not an actual screenshot

this is the awesome boardgame (it's coop! great to play with your wives because everyone wins (or not)) that
originally inspired me.

but watch this:

A Pyweek 11 entry *again: not a screenshot

this is the pyweek game that reminded me to really nail a real-time version of the board game. on a COMPUTER! also:
i love that radar look. i always wanted to do a "24" tv series game where the player gets to whisper "within the
hour" to progress at some point. and look at the awesome radars/satellites.

then i heard about that new steven soderbergh movie 'contagion'. but i already started coding up my little thing when i first heard about that movie - so scratch the last one.

and finally, an actual screenshot from the start menu of the game:

Y8Y2 start screen

yep. that last one is the only pic of the game i am going to show from the actual game that is all you get to see (my tv series loving wives agree). more pics and infos... soon (though probably not within the hour).

ps.: i was lying about pandemic being awesome with wives: most do not like the infection/epidemic theme. maybe
they would enjoy it with ponies, but how would do work?

Infected ponies become pink.
3D pink pony models are available here: https://code.google.com/p/pink-pony/ :)

Yes. Ponies.

Also: Hacking. Hacking is nice. Perhaps something from here might inspire you?: http://www.bearjam.de/2011/09/berlin-mi ... -2011.html and http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=122200

I was thinking about node-based games recently and got the idea that one could turn this into a game of knowledge/belief-network (see the web game evil cult http://www.in-fi-del.net/static/index.html ). The theme could be backchat and rumor-spreading or "may the best conspiracy theory win" ( http://xkcd.com/966/ )

hi qubodup,
i thank you for the ideas. but the ponies and major theme change was not honest, i was joking! thanks anyways.

on to my prepared release announcement. tell me what you think - i will probably tune the game, but not change anything significant about it.

==============
RELEASE STATEMENT

The Y8Y2 gobal infection simulation is, like all great games of strategy, primarely about positioning your units in way favorable to fulfilling your current and future objectives. The strategic part lies in being prepared for what comes. Executing orders is the easy part.

A global infection, like all cooperative strategies in the sense of 'game theory', must be dealt with by having all participating parties obey the primary objective of minimizing global suffering.

Don't hesitate to send help. Once an infection has taken hold, it will quickly spread.

But remember: You control only one party involved. The participation of all is required to combat a spreading infection. Anticipate what the AI will do - your computer partners are sadly sometimes egoistic in a stupid way. They might even change a cooperative plan if their own interests are in danger. Try to prevent them from being harmful to their own interests.

Play Y8Y2 Infection Simulation: http://doktorfinkelstein.bitbucket.org (play EU if you never played before)

(you need a recent browser and some CPU power ;)
