Hero of Allacrost is a single player 2D role-playing game inspired by classic console RPGs. In Hero of Allacrost, the player explores rich environments, solves challenging dungeon puzzles, and fights strategic battles in an active-time based system. The game is free open-source software and is currently available across several platforms including Windows, OS X, Linux, and FreeBSD. In addition to the game, we also develop and release a custom content editor for the game. Development on the game and editor began in June 2004.
Allacrost has been mentioned in the FreeGamer blog several times in the past so I'm sure at least some of you have heard about us. We've released several playable demos during our engine development phase (click for download instructions) and are currently working on the release that covers the first chapter of the full game. We also periodically make available "development" releases, which are basically snapshots of the state of the game during development. Our latest development release was made available less than a week ago (June 12th, 2011). Screenshots, artwork, and a gameplay video are posted below for your viewing pleasure.
Like most projects, we're in a perpetual need for additional help to move development along faster. Currently our team consists of less than ten people working in their little spare time, so the amount of progress we can make is limited. Our major recruitment needs at the moment include: 2D artists, C++ programmers, and general designers to help us create our maps, scripts, and balance the game (doing this is easy and doesn't require extensive programming/technical knowledge). I'll update this thread whenever we're actively looking to bring some more help aboard. If you'd like to help out, the best way to start is by hoping on our IRC channel (#allacrost at irc.freenode.net) or making a post on our forums indicating that you'd like to help out. Optionally there is an application form on our website that you can submit if you prefer a more formal process, but really we prefer you hoping on IRC or the forums instead.
