looks pretty cool... will have a closer look. Too bad it seems to be 'infested' with unfree media.

Hey guys :D I am a co-founder on this project and I can answer anything you need to know.

"infested" with unfree media? Where? I assure you if you refer to the test videos, these are old and just for show, our engine is not tainted and we are very careful about that, no worries. The day cycle is far and wide more advanced now as well, with accurate stars even :P

The engine has all kinds of features, needs more, needs people to get behind it and own it with us - thanks for telling this forum about us, maybe someone will come over and drop us a line.

Really, we could really use a bunch more leaders, give the page a look and if you love this sort of game, we've love to have the help in developing it.

The Grit Game Engine is a community project to build a free game engine (and pipeline tool-chain) for implementing open world 3D games, such as the those in the GTA series, Saints Row, Crysis, Fallout 3, Just Cause 2, Mafia 2, Burnout, etc. Anyone can use the engine as a foundation for their game, and anyone can read / modify / integrate the source code.

While there are many open source game engines, ours is the only one that is being optimized for open world games. We support large maps (e.g. more than 30 square km, 50000 objects) with considerable diversity in geometry and textures, because game objects and scenery consume negligible memory / CPU resources when out of visual range. We also use deferred shading, which is essential for rendering the abundance of light sources that are needed in open world scenes.

A key objective of the Grit Game Engine project is to enable ‘modders’ and other enthusiasts to build extremely diverse interactivity and gameplay into their environments. Although we support exporting from 3D Studio Max, even non-programmers find it easy to define new game object classes, materials, etc using simple definitions inside Lua scripts.

I still miss a car game with heavily deformable cars (and accordingly changing car physics) like the original Carmageddon had.

I’ve just found out about this game engine today. I was about to post about it in the forums, lucky I searched first.

I have not much experience with game engines, but I am eager to have a look at the existing code base and try to understand it. It may be too early for it, but I will see if I can help on the internationalization department.
