ad infinitum, galactic empire strategy game

hello,
I am coding an open source game: ad infinitum
Link: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ad-infinitum/
The project is currently a work in progress but an alpha version can be dowloaded at link. I hope this version gives a clear indication of the games direction.
project is programed in C for windows and using the libraries of directX draw.
It has been a while since I have returned to the project and would like to regenerate some interest in the hope of attracting help, support, advice and general interest.
The general ideas of the game are set out and discused at http://www.kborek.cz/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=949
Yours ever, BB

looks sweet, what kind of game would you class it as?

I know I'm kind of lazy. But hey, so are probably most of us just reading the threads and not commenting ;)
I agree with Q until I post differently.

Hi Brodie, I've spotted Ad Infinitum before.

How tied to DirectX/Windows are you? Have you had a look at SDL?

Of course, the reason for the :( faces is down to it being Windows-only; many FOSS-aware people are Linux (or alternative OS) users.

It will probably broaden the likely player base if you could port it away from DirectX which is why I brought up SDL.

I think it's reasonable to propose possible improved libraries - if someone is just using DirectDraw in the old 2D way, then SDL is likely to be easier anyway, with added bonus of more portable.

But I don't think we should condemn something simply for being Windows only. Sometimes people do just write for a single platform - whether it's Windows, or something else.

I agree mdwh, I just brought it up as a constructive suggestion and wanted to explain the :( faces because I didn't feel that was constructive.

All FOSS games are welcome; the platform is not an issue but of course we always encourage cross-platform and support of the FOSS OSes.

Haiku games anybody? :D

Hello,

what kind of game would you class it as?

A galactic 4x. a sort of real time but incorporating the strategy of turned based games (e.g units obay the laws of hexes)

How tied to DirectX/Windows are you? Have you had a look at SDL?

The thing is I am programming in what I know. The project is hugely complex and very ambitious and it is just me lonesome self working on it at the moment. I think it would be a mistake to proceed with such a project using libraries I am unfamiliar with. On a sub note, C is very portable, so the game should be easily adaptable, at least one hopes so.

Thanks for the input.

I thought so Brodie. Anyway, if it tickles your fancy to have a look at any point, here is a good set of tutorials that should give you an idea of how SDL works and whether it is suitable in the future.
