Goblin camp is inspired by few games. As author himself noted: "Goblin Camp is a roguelike citybuilder, inspired by Anno 1404, Dwarf Fortress and Dungeon Keeper."
Its still in relatively early stages of development but very playable. Its notably user-friendly (menus, hints, mouse, shortcuts) and pleasure to play (not like many other geek open source making-it-for-myself projects)
Here you can read about author's future plans: http://www.goblincamp.com/future-plans/

Its worth noting that ASCII graphics are only default. From version 0.14 it fully supports tilesets. Default tileset is included and settable in game options without improvisations.
There is a multi-part video tutorial on how to play.

And here are two screenshots from my game:

I am not in any way affiliated with author of this project (outside of being a member on his forum).

Not really a fan of this type of games, but it looks quite polished already!

Oh wow, Goblin Camp with tilesets looks awesome! I haven't looked at it in quite a while though, but it has always been on my "projects to watch" list. Can't say I enjoy the gameplay all that much though, especially having been spoiled with Dwarf Fortress. Having enemies pop out of resource structures feels like a kind of cheap way to introduce difficulty, and really, really upsets my obsessive way of building secure forts ;)

I guess what I really want is DF with GC's interface, but I do understand that it is kind of unrealistic to expect anyone to pull that off.
