Libre Game Recommendations List

Re: Libre Game Recommendations List

Generally you don't. What I'm actually concerned about is harming the reputation of the 0 A.D. project by recommending it to players (not developers or libre software enthusiasts) before it's ready, mostly because of the speed issues it's still dealing with and the missing features. When those are sorted out, you're right, no one will care about trivial things like graphics, so I definitely look forward to recommending 0 A.D. when it's done. Until then, as I say on the "rejected" page, I definitely encourage everyone who is interested in working on games to contribute to 0 A.D. and other unfinished libre games.

The same rationale applies to Naev, FreeOrion, and Plee the Bear. Naev, in particular, is possibly one of my favorite libre games (there's a reason I've contributed so much to it), and you can have a lot of fun playing it, but it's not done yet, so I'm still not listing it.

onpon4 {l Wrote}:"Open source" does not mean "available without cost". When you buy Sleep Is Death, you get the source code, and it's in the public domain (like everything else Jason Rohrer has written). So yes, it's open source, and more importantly, it's libre.

Ok. I understand that but I didn't see any explanation on the site what license the code is supplied under. If I get the code after paying, I assume it has a restrictive license unless told otherwise.

Yeah, Jason Rohrer doesn't believe in copyright, so he puts everything he writes in the public domain. He'll reaffirm this if you send him an email. Sleep Is Death doesn't contain any notices telling you that it's in the public domain (a bad habit he used to have), but his newer games do (thank goodness).

Just added Flare RPG to the list now that I've finished it (playing as an Adept). Very nice game! I haven't played many proprietary RPGs, but of the few I have played, I would compare the Empyrean Campaign quite favorably.

Some ideas:

Liberal crime squad An interesting game, not sure if it's linux native though.
Sauerbraten If it's not too generic.
Spring engine and related games. Started as a Total Annihilation clone type thing but has a lot of other content made for it now.

Can someone comment on OpenTTD?

There is a list here. Maybe you could make a separate section for clones. Many of the clone games, like openttd, openRA, and freeciv has added a lot more on top of the original games they emulate.

Sauerbraten is not libre.

There are a lot of Spring games. Would you recommend any particular ones? I should certainly give some of them a try. I've been curious about Kernel Panic for quite a while, and Zero-K looks nice based on the screenshots and videos.

Maybe you could make a separate section for clones.

I've considered that. If I do so, it should be a separate page.

Recently removed the following games because I played them again and decided they're not really good enough for the list:

* Balder2D (too unpolished, and fun, but not fun enough for inclusion on this list)
* Garden of Coloured Lights (actually not very fun at all, and poorer production quality than I remembered)
* Globulation 2 (An interesting concept on paper, but upon playing it again, I think I was in too much of a rush to like it. It's actually not very fun and has rather annoying audio.)
* Holotz Castle (Not actually that great of a game, come to think of it. I think I just allowed my personal bias in favor of Lode Runner-like games to seep in.)
* PARSEC47 (One of Kenta Cho's games, and pretty nice, but actually not particularly distinguished, come to think of it. It's just a standard scrolling shooter, and even the graphics are nowhere near as good as his other games.)
* Slappa (A fun game, but lacks polish, come to think of it, mostly owing to the fact that it was only made for PyWeek. Needs some clean-up of its directory structure, display issues fixed, customizable controls, and to be properly released, preferably with binaries available made with something like PyInstaller.)

Mentioning this here so this can be discussed, if anyone wants to do so.

A bit OT, but I was looking at your rejected list, specifically the too incompleat list, and noticed ardentryst which I hadn't seen in quite a while. Curious if it was still dead I did some googling. Looks like the original dev is working to remaking it. Looked around and didn't see anything saying it would be FOSS or not but thought that was an interesting thing to note. Link: http://ardentryst.jordantrudgett.com/

I'm thinking it will probably not be a FOSS game since it seems the dev went on to become a decent indie dev working on starbound and the like. But one can hope.

Concerning roguelikes, there are quite a few more worth mentioning libre games out there. For example, in this list there are several I would consider finished games with an active community: in addition to the already mentioned DCSS, CataclysmDDA and IVAN, I would add Brogue and Angband. I think that the ASCII version of Tales of Maj'Eyal and Infra Arcana are libre too, but they would perhaps not fit very nicely in a libre game list because their tiles variants are not libre.

Good games I like:

- Neverball
- Cubosphere
- Extreme Tux Racer
- Wyrmsun
- GL-117
- Annex: Conquer the World
- Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
- Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
- Hyperrogue

Please re-evaluate Freedroid RPG. I think they have fixed the ending a long time ago. I was able to play this game and complete it, it never had game-breaking bugs to me. Maybe you were playing an old version?

As for games rejected because they're clones or too similar to another game: Not all clones are created equal. :)
I'd suggest making a separate section for clones. I feel a little heartbroken to see Hedgewars there. :(
I didn't even know XMoto was a clone of something.

No, I was very certain to play the absolute latest version because I was planning on adding it. In fact, the problems I had seem to be new; I don't recall experiencing this with the old version I originally played through.

I considered that, but then I found that there are so many nice clones, I just don't have the time for that. Besides, it's a separate goal from this list; this list is to show the best that libre games bring to the table for gaming, not their attempts to copy already successful formulas, and not to help people find games that replace proprietary games they're used to. In fact one of the big motivations I had was to go against the idea that all good libre games are clones.

I didn't even know XMoto was a clone of something.

Not a clone, but a generic motocross-type game (of which there are several).

Neverball: yeah, that should probably be added. I've played it before and remember I found it to be done well. I'll look it over soon.

Extreme Tux Racer: I originally had this on, but was convinced by this video to reconsider:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNWMhrAwQU4

After I gave it another test run, I tend to agree with this guy.

I'm not familiar with the others. I'll have to test them. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, especially, since several people have mentioned it.

Definitely check out Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, its great. The developers have spent a lot of time focusing on game balance and it shows. It is also probably one of the most popular and well-known fully libre games out there.

Also, have you checked out The Powder Toy? It is very cool and can provide hours of enjoyment, of the open-ended variety. It is one of those things like Conway's Game of Life that are fun to just play with. :) I can see how some might not consider The Powder Toy to be a "game" in the traditional sense, though.

I just checked out your list again and found OpenClonk there.
This game is a clone of the Shareware game series Clonk (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clonk).
Maybe you should remove this one,

You are mistaken. OpenClonk is a successor to Clonk, essentially an unofficial sequel (note: the proprietary Clonk series is discontinued).

OpenClonk is also much better production-wise than any of the proprietary Clonk games. So even if it were a clone, it would be a pass on those grounds alone.

I understand. I only was a bit confused because the properietary Clonk wasn't mentioned in the description. I thought you may not know about it.

Clonk isn't mentioned because I don't think it's noteworthy. It wasn't a very popular game series, and personally, I never even heard of it before reading the Wikipedia article on OpenClonk.

I'm going to recommend my own game, Wograld, with the caveat that I don't know if windows users would have a hard time running the server part. Even though its actually only alpha 0.1, I will have you know its actually an old fork of crossfire, a long more or less complete game, so the actually reason for alpha isn't incompleteness so much as 1) user interface needs work. 2) it does not even come close to some of the features of my original vision and instead has most of the old crossfire races classes and crummy level system, although a lot of the hard game mechanics of crossfire are toned down (namely stat loss upon death, we don't need to punish everyone like they are old school UO pks just cause they died in an incomplete multiplayer rpg. Trust me when I say stat loss caused a massive drop in the pk population, it was way too few for some players, and way to many for a lot of others.) Also much of the graphics of the original are heavily upgraded/replaced as well as some basic gathering skills, bank boxes and music are implemented.
I highly recommend using whats in the git master repository rather than the release just because it is far more up to date and will compile and run for you.

The reason I am going to recommend it is I find I can play it for hours just by myself without even taking breaks. The random loot, cool looking monsters and quests are enough to keep me hooked.
Also, be sure to check the date on this post before you play it, if it has been awhile, most likely significant improvements have been made to the game.

Let me share my list as well.

  • Freedoom: Simply timeless gameplay, very addictive, beautifully liberated by the FOSS community. Many levels are really stunning and better than in original Doom. Especially great is the Phase 2, recommended engine is PrBoomPlus with software renderer (alternatively OpenGL rendered with texture filtering off for maximum nostalgia).
  • Neverball: Small but high quality masterpiece that lets you record replays and beat records, which adds the kind of addictiveness that captures many perfectionsts (e.g. like Trackmania).
  • Xonotic: Truly awesome arena shooter with beautiful graphics, animation, maps, nice novel ideas and many multiplayer servers. Very good upgrade from OpenArena. Oh, and you can play football in this game.
  • Pingus: Great game for just chilling. Some levels are hard, but the game can be paused and analyzed at any time.
  • Ryzom: There's not much more you could ask for than a freaking 3D libre MMORPG that is in addition free to play. Immersive as any other AAA game of this type. Many hours of my life went into this game.
  • OpenArena: Good old arena shooter that runs on any potato. Simpler, straightforward, oldschool classic.
  • Mindustry: Another recent gem -- we see some innovative ideas combined with a tower defense game and features like multiplayer and different game modes. It seems like this game has a very bright future.
  • Minetest: It has to be said that Minetest has overcome Minecraft in more ways than just the license. It is superior in design, moddability and also competes very well in community.
  • FLARE: Professional quality RPG, finished and still being improved. Nice stories surrounding the development.
  • SuperTuxKart: Very fun racing with FOSS mascots. There is even a football mode.
  • Red Eclipse: Very nice arena shooter with interesting parkour twist. What I especially love is the fact that it's based on the Cube engine and allows interactive multiplayer map editing -- I've spent hours just creating worlds with friends.
  • 0 A.D.: Could be the flag ship that can easily compete with commercial proprietary games. Again, many hours of fun.
  • Blobby Volley 2: Looks like a joke at first, but try it with a friend.
  • Powder Toy: We could debate whether this is a game, but it is certain this sandbox is very fun to play with. One of the best things about it is the ingame repository of user creations where you can find things from nuclear power plants to working human body, rockets and destroyable cities.
  • Xmoto: Fun with physics -- easy to learn, hard to master. What's lacking in graphics went doubly into the fun element.
  • System Syzygy: Nice puzzle game with a storyline. I haven't finished it yet but the game quality is immediately apparent. Minimalistic style, but balanced, nice humor.
  • FreedroidRPG: Haven't finished this either, but I've gotten pretty far and got very entertained. With a bit more polishing until the release this has potential to become one of the big players.

I'd actually be interested in adding that, but first I'd have to figure out how to reliably play it. I've had problems running it for years.
