Well, except that they permit entries which aren't actually open source / free software.
To be precise, full copyright on game data is okay with them.

So much for “celebrating open source”.

Baby steps :)

It is after all more open-source than other such competitions; And "celebrating mostly open-source" is not a good slogan. Neither is "we will exclude your open-source contribution because we are FOSS zealots".

I am all for libre media licensing in long running open-source projects (that is really a matter of self interest and good project management), but game jams are more like quick prototypes usually reusing placeholder art and so on. Of course if you can find good libre art for it, sure that is preferrable. But if not, I am fine with making your prototype with non-libre art and if it the game-prototype works, you or someone else can start developing it into a proper game and replace the non-libre placeholder assets.

What I don't like about this is that it feeds into the notion that open source / free software is really only about the code.

My main problem is more about the repeated misrepresentation of the terms.

Obviously "celebrating mostly open-source" is a terrible slogan. :D But honest. It perfecly shows that they don't really mean it.

Whatever. There will be many other competitions, and I'm not really interested in competitions in general so why do I even care? XD

Results are out:
https://github.com/blog/2483-game-off-2017-winners

And at least the overall winner is an open-source game (with mostly Free assets) based on Godot: https://securas.itch.io/daemon-vs-demon

Some other strong Godot based contenders as well, but yes also some Unity3D based ones. But maybe with this people can port them to Godot in the future:
