That seems to be the reason for putting it on steam: potentially more online players.
Should have been done IHMO years ago when there were still more players, but lets see how this works out.

Voted as well.
You will get more visibility than you ever had after the release, so make sure the release works well. I would also suggest to contact all people in the old community when the game releases and tell them to play some overtime hours in the first month, since it is important to keep a playerbase alive, that matters more than anything else. But as you have AI as well it might survive without as well, but I would try to keep human player base alive as well, just to be sure.

You don't have to integrate steam features into the game, nor are there any features integrated automatically. Steam simply distributes the game files and optional it also can distribute necessary libraries like directX and stuff. The steam interface is just an overlay, but it is hard to get it to work on linux anyway. For the steam features the game has to be commercial, so either a purchase price or purchaseable ingame content if the game is free, I don't know the exact amount but there is a barrier. I don't know if megaglest will be free or a price, but free games cannot have those features, but if there is a price you maybe can add trading cards and that stuff, but that does not interfere with the game, it is a steam only feature.

As an update, MegaGlest 3.313.0 is out and marks our first Steam release at https://store.steampowered.com/app/578870

In case this question comes up: The licenses (engine + assets) remain unchanged, source code and binaries remain available on the previous distribution channel. Steam and non Steam builds are fully compatible.
