Mozilla awarded almost $400,000 to various open source projects, among which the MIT licensed game engine Godot, which gets awarded $20,000 to work on the support of Web Sockets, WebAssembly and WebGL 2.0.
This is really exciting news as it should address two of Godot Engine's current limitations:
- Poor performance of the HTML5 export based on ASM.js/Emscripten. Working hand in hand with Mozilla to use the upcoming WebAssembly and the latest standards should make Godot one of the best open source game engines for native and web-based games alike.
- The WebGL 2.0 API should be pretty similar to GLES 3, which means that the funds of this Mozilla award might help dramatically increase the features and performance of Godot's renderer (currently based on GLES 2 / OpenGL 2.1), ensure at the same time great performance on the web, desktop and mobile platforms
