Wish-List: Open Source Clones

I would like to create a list of classic games which still haven't an open source clone. So that prospective developers can look which projects are still required.

My suggestions:
1. Midwinter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwinter_(video_game))
2. SimEarth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SimEarth)
3. Indianapolis 500:The Simulation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indianapolis_500:_The_Simulation)
4. Falcon Patrol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcon_Patrol_II)
5. Summer/Winter/World Games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_Games)
6. Raid on Bungeling Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raid_on_Bungeling_Bay)

Happy posting! :D

7. Vampire Savior
8. WWF No Mercy
9. Starfleet Command
10. Subspace
11. 688
12. Gauntlet IV
13. Mario Party. Someday, there'll be the "Year of Linux on the TV" for such a thing.
14. Command & Conquer (there's plenty of Stratagus-based Blizzard-likes with their own media projects, but nothing for the FOSS C&C engine clones out there)
15. WarBirds 2.0 (the one formerly known as Confirmed Kill)
16. Artificial Girl 3.
.....Yeah, some genres are completely ignored because they're less straightforward (i.e. not a first person shooter) D:

THE FOLLOWING ARE FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS THAT DON'T REALLY HAVE FAITHFUL CLONES AND ARE SUCH NOT IMPORTANT TO CLONE
17. Unreal Tournament 2004/Unreal Tournament III (a new modular NOT ID TECH engine would need to do this properly, so don't even mention Xonotic.)
18. Counter-Strike. We have "real weapons" shooters already but none play with the bomb/hostage/vip gametypes and some don't even have proper locational damage. It just seems odd that one of the most popular multiplayer FPSes of all time doesn't have a proper clone. Darkplaces would be suited for it even with the HITMODEL extension and such to calculate skeletal locational damage.
19. Starsiege Tribes. Modularity would also be required for this one. Joining a server with some wacky serverside mod stuff was part of the fun, that and maps composed of just heightmaps and placed objects/structures. Ascend/2/Vengeance isn't the same. Maybe when Torque3D getting around in the open source world can logically lead to this as it's a direct evolution of the same "Darkstar" engine.

I'd like a good "serious" FOSS fighting game. Something balanced and polished that could be played in tournaments. Paintown lacks both balance and polish unfortunately, and that's about as good as it gets as far as FOSS goes in this genre - I'd like to do something like this in the future, but a serious fighting game is a huge undertaking; I probably wouldn't be able to do it alone.

I'm working on something I would like to end up like super smash mêlée. it's taking forever though, since we're only two people barely working part-time on it. https://github.com/stiell/limbs-off. patches are *very* welcome.

personally I don't want any clones. I want *new* and exciting games. especially RPGs.

Need for Speed is, according to Wikipedia "the most successful racing video game series in the world, and one of the most successful video game franchises of all time. As of October 2009, over 100 million copies of games in the Need for Speed series have been sold." So I can't believe that even after all these years, there has been no notable efforts whatsoever of copying the core game mechanics, at least of the earlier games (like NfS III).
'
But I'd be happy to see more good racing games at all since that's pretty lacking in the FOSS and OSS worlds.

I have been advocating for something along the lines of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for years.

Especially now considering how god-freaking-awful the recently released PC port of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD turned out... :x

That would be a cool idea for a online party/board game with mini games.

There's also a lack of a modern open-world kind city of game. Plenty of middle age fantasy though

Yeah, spoiled a bit by the Saints Row The Third free weekend, great game :P

20. Fallout 1 and 2.
21. Blood. The source of Build engine is already opened by its author, Ken Silverman.
22. Quest for Glory 1-5.
23. Baldur's Gate 1-2 (and there is already a large modding community that can produce storyline, scripts, etc).

Exists already, see here:

Sadly development has been dead for quite some time.

The Build source code does not allow commercial use, and hence is definitely NOT "open source" even though the source is available.

There are other weird restrictions too:

{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
BUILD SOURCE CODE LICENSE TERMS:                             06/20/2000

[1] I give you permission to make modifications to my Build source and
       distribute it, BUT:

[2] Any derivative works based on my Build source may be distributed ONLY
       through the INTERNET.

[3] Distribution of any derivative works MUST be done completely FREE of
charge - no commercial exploitation whatsoever.

[4] Anything you distribute which uses a part of my Build Engine source
       code MUST include:

[A] The following message somewhere in the archive:

// "Build Engine & Tools" Copyright (c) 1993-1997 Ken Silverman
       // Ken Silverman's official web site: "http://www.advsys.net/ken"
// See the included license file "BUILDLIC.TXT" for license info.

[B] This text file "BUILDLIC.TXT" along with it.

[C] Any source files that you modify must include this message as well:

// This file has been modified from Ken Silverman's original release

[5] The use of the Build Engine for commercial purposes will require an
appropriate license arrangement with me. Contact information is
       on my web site.

[6] I take no responsibility for damage to your system.

[7] Technical support: Before contacting me with questions, please read
and do ALL of the following!

[A] Look through ALL of my text files. There are 7 of them (including this
one). I like to think that I wrote them for a reason. You will find
many of your answers in the history section of BUILD.TXT and
          BUILD2.TXT (they're located inside SRC.ZIP).

[B] If that doesn't satisfy you, then try going to:

where I will maintain a Build Source Code FAQ (or perhaps I might
just provide a link to a good FAQ).

[C] I am willing to respond to questions, but ONLY if they come at a rate
          that I can handle.

PLEASE TRY TO AVOID ASKING DUPLICATE QUESTIONS!

As my line of defense, I will post my current policy about
answering Build source questions (right below the E-mail address
on my web site.) You can check there to see if I'm getting
          overloaded with questions or not.

If I'm too busy, it might say something like this:

I'm too busy to answer Build source questions right now.
Sorry, but don't expect a reply from me any time soon.

If I'm open for Build source questions, please state your question
clearly and don't include any unsolicited attachments unless
they're really small (like less than 50k). Assume that I have
a 28.8k modem. Also, don't leave out important details just
to make your question appear shorter - making me guess what
you're asking doesn't save me time!

To add some games to the wish-list:

24. MechCommander
25. Shadowrun (there's a new commercial Shadowrun game in the works, so this has lower priority for me ;) )
26. Warhammer 40k: Final Liberation
27. General Chaos
28. Rollercoaster Tycoon or Theme Park games
29. GTA1 + 2 (only 2D GTAs are real GTAs for me!)
30. Warhammer Dark Omen
31. Speedball 2 (this would be cool with online games and leagues)

Yeah, that would be cool. There was a start doing one with the Warzone2100 engine once, but due to lacking mesh animation options it was abandoned again. Now I think it would be more feasible again since that engine progressed quite a bit (maybe also with the 0A.D engine).

BOFH does feel quite like GTA (even though it's missing cars and outdoor areas).

Mechs in 0AD would be beautiful. Playing mechs vs romans would be fun. :D This reminds me of Empire Earth which was similar to AoE, but it also had modern units and even mechs and nukes. That would be a cool mod for 0AD.

I've gotta check it out. Are there also missions like in GTA?

I think the question is: would it be harder to add modular units to 0AD or mesh animations and an art pipeline to WZ2100?

As far as I know there are only two missions/levels, one of which is pretty big and has multiple floors inside a building with a timer of 60 or 120 minutes, while the other is only a few seconds long ("destroy all things in a room").

An open-source shmup clone like R-type would be nice to play, or a cool metroid-vania game, imho.

Here are my additions to the wishlist :-

a. Sims (the original) and not the later paper-downed versions of later which had more bling but less gameplay and interactivity.

b. Virtual Villagers kinda game

Both of the above are non-violentic so people who like violence would not enjoy it but many people would.

Wasn't it possible to let your sims starve to death by locking them in the toilet? :D Does that count as violence?

Theorotically you could do that, but I never did that. I'm sure your sims never forgave you for that :D
