Call for Participation: Game Development @ FOSDEM 2020

Call for Participation: Game Development @ FOSDEM 2020

Postby Akien » 09 Oct 2019, 15:46

Hi dear FreeGameDev community members. It's been a while :)

Together with two other Godot contributors, we organize a (Free and Open Source) Game Development devroom at FOSDEM 2020 next February in Brussels, Belgium.

The FOSDEM organizers provide us with a dedicated room for a full day (a priori Saturday 1 February) to have presentations about free and open source game development topics. While the organizers are Godot developers, this is not about Godot specifically and we are interested in talks about any kind of game development tool or FOSS game project.

See the Call for Participation on Godot's blog.
It was also cross-posted on the FOSDEM mailing list, I'll add a link to the post once they update the archive.

The deadline for submissions is December 1, 2019.
Godot Engine project manager and maintainer.
Occasional FOSS gamedev: Lugaru, OpenDungeons, Jetpaca, Minilens.

Ironically, Google is sponsoring this event. Quote directly from the website:

Google’s innovative search technologies connect millions of people around the world with information every day. Founded in 1998 by Stanford Ph.D. students Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google today is a top web property in all major global markets. Google’s targeted advertising program, which is the largest and fastest growing in the industry, provides businesses of all sizes with measurable results, while enhancing the overall web experience for users.

Well, Google's marketing dept. couldn't have written it any better! :eew: What the website doesn't tell you is that the “targeted advertising program” usually runs on proprietary software. In fact, lots of Google's key products are proprietary, and you can't easily avoid Google's proprietary code in the web, for example reCAPTCHA which many websites force you to fill in. :x Google is also the head of a very questionable web “standard” called AMP where Google basically tries to own the Web.

How FOSDEM could accept even one penny from such a company is … a little strange, to put it diplomatically. :D

This makes me wonder: What would happen if a high number of Anti-Google talks would be submitted to FOSDEM? :p
