New Game Using FLARE (Where to Start)?

New Game Using FLARE (Where to Start)?

Postby SirFency » 04 Sep 2019, 21:46

I tried to post in the OpenGameArt.org Forums under the FLARE section but it seems like thier website is broken.

I want to begin creating a new game. I don’t know where to start. I need some direction as to where to get information on creating a new game using the Flare Engine. I was building it in RPG maker until I came across the FLARE Engine and it will be far easier for me to use this engine then to completely customize every aspect of RPG maker. Could someone please point me in the correct direction.

Here is what I mean when I say a new game.

Completely new maps, new quests, new NPC's, a far more robust character creation system with attribute allocation.
I know how to make maps. That’s basically it. I don’t know how to implement them. I don’t know anything else about the engine either because the resources seem to be quite thin on the internet so far.

Any help is greatly appreciated Thank you for your time.

If you haven't already, the "For Modders" section of the wiki is the best place to start. The "Creating a Map in Tiled" page might be worth following, as it uses the Flare Starter Pack as a minimal base for creating a completely new game.

Thank you. I'm using Chrome. Not sure why it would not post last night.

Still broke. It has been broke for a while. (I mean the opengameart.org forum.)
I can't believe I'm saying this, but maybe they should turn into a commercial business and then hire a full time system admin.

Na, they just need to stop depending on this monolithic outdated Drupal monster Bart build back in the day. It would literally take only half a day or so to disable the broken forums and install a Discourse or Flarum to replace it.

But I argued with them about it previously and I am not going to do it again. But I am happy to help if they change their mind.

Edit: SirFency did you try their IRC channel? #flarerpg or #opengameart on freenode. You can easily connect with our webirc https://irc.freegamedev.net

Thanks for the information dorkster. Are there any mods people have started that you would recommend. I looked at one made before the 1.0 release but it didn't seem to work anymore.

(I can post to opengameart.org if I disable the rich text control.)

Thank you guys for the help. It's a shame the forum specifically for the people who want to built using FLARE is not set up properly. It does not give me much confidence in the FLARE Engine itself if the information is so disorganized and the forum does not function. I will start with the area you suggested Dorkster. Thank you for that. I have not tried the IRC Channels Julius. I was debating on whether I should even use FLARE because the information is so sparse and difficult to find. I will begin to use the IRC and see if they are active once I have worked through the Tutorials you have outlined for me Dorkster.
Once again thank you for the help.

I've never had a problem with opengameart forum before so I wouldn't consider this a common thing. Also the forum is there probably because it offered to host it. If the forum is constantly having problems and doesn't switch forums, it might tell you that the forum is not considered important by the project but again doesn't say the project is bad. There are advantages to joining a project early. They don't have a lot of users to cater to so your request may have higher priority. Several features of Bt Builder were added because people wanted them for a game. You can also contribute to tutorials. People may offer more suggestions to improve your game that way or may thank you in their projects for the help you provided.

I used to compare Drupal developers to a piranha pool, as in fishes that swarm and eat live animals. I also joked that it was as newbie friendly as a rattlesnake (meaning not newbie friendly at all.)
I'm not surprised that it has mostly gone away. Everyone uses things like wordpress and other forums (like Discourse or Flarum) for good reason.
