I've just found out that a new major version of Mindustry, probably the best libre tower defense and one of the best recent libre games, has been released after over a year.

I haven't tried it yet as I am still downloading it and haven't checked the details, I just though I should share this ASAP.

Mkay, I get segfault on start :) Have already create an issue. Anyone else getting that?

EDIT: looks like caused by a weird packing tool, you can just run the game with "java -jar desktop-release.jar".

EDIT 2: Yep, the game is awesome, tons of new features.

This is like an extremely more complex version of a Flash game I prototyped in 2012. Ah, supply chain management. What a nice game concept.

Been playing it basically my whole 12 hour night shift yesterday :P Despite that I haven't nearly "finished" the game, so I can't sum up all new features as I haven't seen it all yet, but here are some things I noticed:

The core gameplay is in essence the same as the previous version, which is great because that was very well done already. There are a few changes like being able to take on different mech forms, e.g. a building mech that is flying and gets everywhere without collisions or an attack mech that is stronger in battle but is slower and can't go through walls. The graphics now uses a pixel-scaling algorithm when you zoom in, so instead of pixelated graphics you get something looking more like a vector graphics (whetheryou'll like this really depends on your taste). The towers, materials and gameplay rules have been changed a bit, but I guess it's only for the better -- e.g. the power nodes can now transfer electricity in any direction, not just along principal axes. There are small things like being able to mine materials manually, build diagonally etc.

I am really loving the tech tree in the campaign mode, it adds that RPG element that motivates you to replay levels to earn more resources to buy new technology. There is also an ingame database of all materials, towers and mechs that you have dscovered that makes you want to complete that collection. The campaign itself challenges you to unlock new levels.

Then there is a level editor and multiplayer, which I have understood also has a PvP mode. I haven't tried these yet, but it definitely sounds pretty awesome.

Very well done, I would like to congratulate and thank the author and contributors for making such a great game.

It is a awesome game. For me, it is a demake of Factorio.
