Libre clone recommendations list

Libre clone recommendations list

Postby onpon4 » 27 Apr 2019, 16:37

So, I posted a link to my libre game recommendations list some time ago. Or at least, I think I did:

http://onpon4.github.io/articles/libre-games.html

Well, I decided to expand that a bit and add a section for clones and implementations (e.g. board games) as well. It's on the same page, but toward the bottom:

http://onpon4.github.io/articles/libre- ... tml#clones

Let me know what you think, and if there's anything noteworthy I missed. :)

Cool. You've got a page that can easily compete with osgameclones if more people knew about it. I had never heard of gnurobbo. My only real complaint is with the games themselves. There's a goshdarn lot of SDL 1.2 in there.

Yeah, there's a lot of old stuff in there. Wouldn't hurt to get some more modern ones in there however I think Onpon's criteria might be interfering with that. Reading them it seems to me like a lot of "clones" would fit neither in the first list for being too close to the games they're cloning but also not in the second one for being too different. Things like Widelands or Unknown Horizons come to mind.

Anyway, here's a noteworthy one I greatly enjoy that might fit the bill:
OpenSpades
It's an implementation of Ace of Spades 0.75 with some improvements.
For the people that don't know about Ace of Spades, it's a quite unique multiplayer FPS. The default game mode is Capture the Flag on an asymmetrical map. The green team has the lowlands with a river going through it and the blue team has the highlands. The map is voxel based and teams can dig and build fortifications similar to Minecraft. The asymmetrical nature of the default map generation leads to the two teams usually picking up very different defensive tactics. There's plenty of other maps and game modes of course (and the active servers seem to prefer those) but I still like the default the most because of that.
None of the improvements of OpenSpades affect the gameplay. It does have a lot of QoL stuff though, is cross-platform of course and graphics and sound are heavily improved. The sound is honestly some of the most immersive I have ever heard in a video game. Almost feels like you're sitting in a trench, hearing shots in the distance or getting paranoid from the constant digging sound somewhere. Of course the voxel graphics might interfere with that a little.
The game is fully compatible with the original Ace of Spades 0.75 or other clients like BetterSpades which is more faithful to the original. Thinking about it, if OpenSpades is not clone enough for the list BetterSpades sure should be.
As it is a multiplayer game open source server software is available as well of course.

Ha, that's probably a good call.

The good news is, apparently my list isn't missing much.
