What kind of open source linux terminal games do you like?

My favorites:

1. Ascii Patrol - http://ascii-patrol.com/ Ascii Patrol is an ASCII game project. It was inspired by Moon Patrol - old good game.
2. ASCIIpOrtal - https://github.com/cymonsgames/ASCIIpOrtal ASCIIpOrtal is a text based puzzle game inspired by valve's Portal.
3. MyMan - https://myman.sourceforge.io/ MyMan is a text-mode videogame inspired by Namco's Pac-Man. Best version of Pac-man for me.
4. Conix - https://bitbucket.org/garnold/conix/ Conix is a console-based Xonix clone.
5. Curse of War - http://a-nikolaev.github.io/curseofwar/ Curse of War is a fast-paced action strategy game.
6. Robot Finds Kitten - http://robotfindskitten.org/ Best ASCII walking simulator. :-)

Thanks for making this list!

Are there any good game-play videos that would be a good show-case?

If you don't mind we could make a summary post out of it on our FreeGamer blog ("best open-source ASCII games" type blog post always get a lot of interest).

There's always roguelikes. I just recently got into the genre so I mostly stick to simple ones like Boohu (quite fun and beautiful) for now but I often see the following recommended that work in ASCII/terminal:
DRL aka DoomRL Doom as a roguelike
Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead post-apocalyptic sandbox

Then there's the classics of course, like:
Angband
NetHack
and of course the original Rogue, not sure if that has a website but it should be in your package manager.

I like starlanes:
http://www.barnsdle.demon.co.uk/game/starlanes.html
There were several BASIC versions. The link above is to a forked version in C that works with PDCurses or ncurses.

BSDgames has some interesting programs:
https://packages.debian.org/sid/bsdgames

The inconsolation link that was mentioned is a great resource for console based programs. There are also some console based programs mixed in with the reviews or other lightweight programs at https://kmandla.wordpress.com/ Both blogs are by the same author.

Another good resource for finding console applications including games was: http://www.jaredandcoralee.com/CLIapps.html
The site appears to be down, but it may still be accessible from the Wayback Machine at https://archive.org/

Awesome topic, thank you for sharing these resources. I always wanted to look into these but never really got into it. I remember playing greed, which was pretty addictive.

I think a lot of these should be added to Libregamewiki to help people discover them.

I played a lot of Moria and later Angband. A lot of the rogue likes you list seem to be 7 day roguelike challenge creations. I always wanted to try to do that.
