The easter-egg thread

Postby Wuzzy » 25 Jan 2019, 03:04

Hi! This thread is just for fun. :) :D

Post all the silly easter eggs that you found in free games. :)

The only rule is that the game has to be free software for obvious reasons.

Use this template if you want:
Game: ___
Version: ___

That being said, let's get the ball rolling! :D

Xoylent Tuba in Xonotic

Postby Wuzzy » 25 Jan 2019, 03:05

I start with the game Xonotic.

Game: Xonotic
Version: 0.8.2
Description:
In the map “Xoylent”, there is a hidden tuba.
First, you have to find a hidden door. Go to the middle platform, where the mega health is located. Go to the far end of that brown platform, where the Electro and rocket ammo spawns. Use the blaster to push yourself up and jump on the small ledge above you.

That's where you find the door. If you stand directly in front of it, there will be a repeated message asking you for an “Admin ID”. The game wants an “user name” and “password” from you.

Open the console ([Esc]+[Shift]) to enter the following:

{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
tell #0 sev
tell #0 Xoylent

The door will open and giving you access to a tuba and a secret teleporter which teleports you to an asteroid if you stand still for 10s.

Alternatively, you could also have entered:
{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
tell #0 Strahlemann
tell #0 Soylent

Context:
“sev” is the name of the map maker, “Xoylent” is the name of the map.
“Strahlemann” is the name of the map maker of the map “Soylent”, on which Xoylent is based on. Soylent is a map that comes from Nexuiz Classic, the predecessor of Xonotic.

Hidden frog painting in Xonotic

Postby Wuzzy » 08 Nov 2019, 18:39

Game: Xonotic
Version: 0.8.2
Description:
In the map “Boil”, there is a hidden frog painting. You can only see if when spectating or falling out of the map.
Go through to the section where you can walk outside the map, into the deadly drop. If you walk into the deadly drop and fall down and look towards the map walls, you will find the hidden frog. You could also use spectator mode to find it, of course.

Context: This is only a guess, but maybe this is the avatar or logo of “kuniu the frogg” who is one of the map authors.

Secret levels in Irrlamb

Postby Wuzzy » 08 Nov 2019, 19:25

Game: Irrlamb
Version: 1.0.0
Description:
You can unlock 2 secret levels in this game.

House
To unlock the House level, you must play the Tutorial level “Kick”. In the “Kick” level, there are various pillars with orbs, except one pillar which doesn't have anything on it. This seemingly pointless pillar is the key to the secret level. Just jump on this pillar and wait. Eventually you will get teleported the secret House level.

The House level is a very big and long level in which you play in a house in which your ball is very small and have to complete various household tasks.

The House level itself is full of secrets. Thankfully, the game will tell you how many secrets you have found at the end. But you probably want to just finish the level normally first, because it's pretty hard.

Drug
The second secret level is called “Drug”. It is unlocked when you manage to jump into the coffee mug near the TV in the House level. This teleports you to the Drug level. Beware! As soon you teleported to the Drug level, there is no way back to the House.

The Drug level is a very strange level with a seemingly endless checkerboard and a very long alley of stone pillars. And this seems to be it. It's not really remarkable or exciting, it's actually very boring. And it looks like you're on drugs. :) I don't know if the Drug level itself hides any other secrets. It could very well be, due to the extreme size of this level.

It seems there are no orbs in this level.

This level can actually be won. You just need to roll and jump forwards the seemingly endless checkerboard, constantly for about 15 minutes. Eventually the level does end and you win. But be warned: This is very boring!

More X-Mas easter eggs!

Postby Wuzzy » 08 Nov 2019, 20:08

X-Mas-related easter eggs seem to be very common.

Game: Word War vi
Version: 1.00
Description:
X-Mas Mode: Start the game between November 20 and December 31 (system time) and your space ship will turn into a giant flying sled from Santa Claus.
Alternatively, you can add “--xmas” to the command-line if you launch this game from the command-line.

Game: SuperTux
Version: 0.6.0
Description:
Christmas Mode: Start the game between December 6 and December 31 (system time).
The main menu will become more Christmas-themed and whenever Tux gets a fire flower, Tux will wear a Santa hat.
Alternatively, you can add “--christmas” to the command-line. Add “--no-christmas” instead to disable Christmas Mode.
When Christmas Mode is enabled, you can disable it in the settings.

X-Mas Mode: Start the game between November 20 and December 31 (system time) and your space ship will turn into a giant flying sled from Santa Claus.

Also the music will be a Trans-Siberian-Orchestra-esque Christmas version of the usual music and you can deliver presents to houses along the way. If you just apt-get installed, it's possible you didn't get any music, because for a time, the music had a problematic license (I think it was some non-commercial variant of a CC license, since resolved by getting permission to change the license to CC-BY-SA 3.0 from the other two contributors, Marty Kiel and Skip Kavanaugh.) The music actually came first, and is the real reason the christmas mode even exists.

Here is a stereo version of the music (what's in the game is mono). <-- this is quite possibly the best thing I have ever had, or ever will have had a hand in making.

That is the biggest easter egg in there, if it's even an easter egg... it's not exactly a secret. It's more of a Christmas egg. There are a few others, but you will likely have to read (or at least compile) the source code to find them.

When you advance from one level to the next, there's some music that is played, but only a portion of it is played. The full music: https://soundcloud.com/stephen-cameron- ... ox3monomix
