The user creation log suddenly had an influx. Are these spammers?

Good question, I would guess most of them are, the user names seem to follow a pattern (name+surname and/or number).
Hey pal, I took an oath for justice! "In happy days or tightest tights..." or something like that.

Can you see if they have the same IP address?

IP address isn't a reliable way to detect spammers. Spammers use legitimate users as proxies. When IP addresses are blocked because of spamming, massive collateral damage is caused. Most markedly, every Tor node inevitably gets blocked when you do that.

The best thing to do is to have some sort of approval process that spammers aren't likely to pass. I'm pretty sure this board already has one of those in the form of requiring each user's first post to be approved.

on the SMF forum administration side at the OA board, i've had great luck with notCaptcha, which involves rotating 3 random images to the upright position. Pretty simple. I used custom images of OA player icons for this. It massively reduced the spammer count, from 100+ signups a day to the rare 3 a month, and I haven't seen any complaints from legitimate users failing to register from it.

Don't know if that's available for MediaWiki.
