How can I request wiki permission?

How can I request wiki permission?

Postby bzt » 31 May 2022, 22:23

Hi,

I've created a librewiki user, but it looks like as a new user I have no rights to do anything (probably this is a countermesaure for fighting vandalism and bots). May I ask for modify access? (Right now I cannot even modify my own talk page)

Thank you,
bzt

I am honestly not sure who is actually in charge of Libregamewiki these days, but I found this user listed with admin rights.

Hi @Technopeasant,

Technopeasant {l Wrote}:I changed the article title to:

https://libregamewiki.org/List_of_free_ ... on_systems

As it was not exactly shaping into an article on engines in general, and that is kind of way too broad a topic on its own.
I like it! Good thinking!

Could you please fix a few more things on that page?
  • some license links are broken. I guess instead of "[[GPLv3+]]" should be "[[GPL]]v3+" (there's a common GPL page, so avoid the version part to make the links work). Also an issue for "O.H.R.RPG.C.E." and "TirNanoG".
  • there's a page for MegaZeux, so it should be linked, "Name: [[MegaZeux]]".
  • please add "[[Category:Lists and main categories]]" at the bottom. Right now "List of libraries" for example appear on this page, but "List of game creation systems" does not.
Sorry for asking these from you, but I still have no modification rights on the wiki :-(

Thank you!

Nothing wrong with being pedantic in this context, corrected.

Also of note for this discussion is this page I had not read before.

Thank you very much Technopeasant!

Do you mind if I ask a few more modifications? This page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_game_engines
  • Should be in "[[Category:Lists and main categories]]" too, I believe
  • Could you please add TirNanoG to that list after Three.js? Here's the data: TirNanoG | C | Visual | Yes | 2D | Linux, Windows, Android, WebAssembly | | GPL | Similar to RPG Maker, but libre

Ah, me neither. It feels a bit redundant, but okay.

I created a LibreGameWiki user named LibreJacket and I more or less have this same issue. I waited for days for any sign of either approval or rejection for things I attempted to edit, and neither came. Could someone help me out on this?

I'm a moderator on LGW but I don't even know how I became one, a few years back I went to edit many LGW articles, someone probably noticed I was interested in the wiki and made me a moderator, now I just routinely overview and approve pending edits whenever I visit the site, sometimes there are many of them waiting (there probably aren't many active moderators). Just saying in case you want me to edit or review something, you can reach me on email if you have something urgent I guess :)

Would you be able to grant me moderator powers? I am very experienced in wiki administration and presumably one of the more prolific editors on there at this point.

I would certainly love to but it seems I can't, I'm not in Bureaucrats, I'm just in Moderators (there seem to be just 3 modrators in total). There is also a category of Automoderated users which can edit instaly without moderation, I don't know how you become one though. Maybe you can try to reach some Burreaucrat or Administrator to give you the rights (https://libregamewiki.org/index.php?tit ... roup=sysop, https://libregamewiki.org/index.php?tit ... bureaucrat).

With all admins absent, would it be useful to copy all content and open a new wiki? Then we could have active admins.

Are they literally uncontactable? Maybe try to reach Kiba, the founder. Would be easier to try to contact them first and ask if they could pass the admin rights to someone else before hard forking the whole wiki -- it would definitely be possible thanks to the license but it would be a hassle and then there would be 2 wikis. I would also be glad to see more activity and fixing of some current issues.

I agree. Forking should be the last resort plan B.

I don't need moderator right, I would happy if I could just edit the wiki. There's lots of stuff I'd like to add. For example I have a "How to create FOSS SDL games for web" tutorial in very early stages.

Cheers,

The most effective way to reach an admin is via the "Chat" link in the left hand navigation bar. It points to https://web.libera.chat/#libregamewiki and of course you can also use an IRC client.

I am sorry, that moderation is required, and that may take a couple of days until edits are approved. Unfortunately there are reasons, why we are extremely reluctant to add anyone as moderator/admins nowadays.

@bzt, every user can edit articles immediately after registration. The edits will require approval afterwards to become visible, but at this time the queue is empty and there have been no entries from you.

There is one exception: User pages can only be edited after at least one edit to an article has been approved. (This one of two extremely effective anti-spam measurements according to the logs)

@nhnb: thanks! Last time it did not allow me to make any modifications. Now I've changed "web browser" to "Web application" on this page, let's see if moderation now works. Thank you very much!

ps: besides of modifying existing pages, can newly registered users create pages? If not, what's the process for that? Should I ask you to create the page, and then I can fill it up with content and you approve it, or something like that?

Cheers,
bzt

You can open up a new page on your own. I did it for a certain game. But don't make the mistake I did. I pressed "Save" (or whatever it is named) multiple times because I saw no result. After saving it is waiting for approval.
Note that there's a sceleton for an article that you can fill with data.

Edit: Why did you (or someone else?) list Sludge under "Dormant". I don't know but it seems perfectly usable. Maybe there's no project maintainer? But this seems misleading to me. (I am aware that "Dormant" is not the same as "Unusable". But it's still misleading.)

Yep, not so user friendly, there's no message that the modification is waiting for approval, so people think the modification just wasn't saved. But if we know that's the case, I can live with it.

Wasn't me. And I agree, it looks perfectly fine to me too, so I guess the only reason could be no maintainer? I mean there are 4 years old unanswered issues on github, so maybe that's why no maintainer is assumed? It would be a pity for this project to be abandoned, imho, but sadly looks like it :-(

I listed it under dormant as there have been no updates to the page in four years. I am sure it is perfectly usable, but that also applies to Game Editor for example.

Great thing about libre though is that anyone could fork or adopt it.

I just tried it, and the "pending review" popup messages works for me:

I edited a wiki page using my mobile phone and couldn't see that message. I think the message was too deep down and out of sight.

Yeah, your categorization is correct. I only have the impression that some folks who read the list will think "Ah, Sludge is not worth trying because it is unfinished and buggy." That's not a correct assumption, but people will think that way anyway.

About maintaining Sludge: I didn't learn the Sludge language yet. So I don't want to maintain it.
