Audio & Music Contribution

Audio & Music Contribution

Postby TheAudioMonkey » 06 Apr 2017, 19:08

Hey Folks,

As a quick introduction, I'm Lea, a qualified sound engineer & music producer based in the UK looking to help out on the project with some music & sound effects.

I've previously contributed to Xonotic which went down very well and would like to expand my portfolio base.

I really enjoy STK so would love to contribute in any way I can, simply let me know what you need and I'll get it done.

All the best

- Lea

Something for the GP lose scene that doesn't make me want to leave the screen as soon as possible would be nice. :)

Hi, glad to see you join here, and as you've contributed to Xonotic you are probably already aware of licensing issues and the like. :)
Our page explaining STK licensing requirements can be found here: https://supertuxkart.net/Licensing

With that out of the way, there's also this page: https://supertuxkart.net/Music_and_SFX_Guidelines
However as we already have two people working on the music, I'd say better sound FX for many parts of the game would be very welcome. Of course if you want to work on music it's possible, but there could be duplication of efforts issues requiring more communication with the musicians already around.

As you can see the page is very sparse on sound effects requirements, but just as a starting point there's https://sourceforge.net/p/supertuxkart/ ... x-lossless with lossless versions of the sound effects found in the data folder of the game. It would especially be nice having better (and perhaps several?) kart colliding sounds and engine noise(s) since those are some of the effects heard most often, and also complained about most often. Some of that might be because they just get repetitive, and personally I don't find the sounds themselves that bad but the repetition make them a bit tiring.

There's other sound effects too, including track specific ones. I'd also say that more track SFX would be nice, so if you find something in the tracks that could become more alive by adding a sound effect, it would be nice to have a list of suggestions, even better if you find/create those. ;)

If you have questions, feel free to ask here or on IRC. Obviously the latter is a bit restricted due to different people being available at different times, but with some patience it can work well too for communicating.
Hey pal, I took an oath for justice! "In happy days or tightest tights..." or something like that.

Just a note: the main developers are usually on IRC between approximately 23:00–2:00 UTC time. OzoneOne, who does some audio work, is usually on a bit later. If you're in the Americas or Asia these times probably will be OK; not so much in Europe.

I agree that SFX is the bigger priority for now, but it would be really awesome if at some point you were able to supply your music mixing + mastering skills also! The biggest time sinker for me while creating STK's music is mixing, so having someone else, let alone a professional, handle that stuff in future would be incredibly helpful.

Great, I love mixing & mastering ^_^ - More than happy to help out. What I would say is you may struggle to get me on the forums all the time, so alternate contact details: lea@theaudiomonkey.co.uk Skype: lea.r.edwards hit me up any time :) Though whilst this project is going on I will be around here so if there's anything that immediately needs doing just let me know.

I would love to create some music too at some point if you need any more, would be a fun project :)

All the best

- Lea
