update of the speedometer concept with lights for brake and reverse gear. i don't know if it's possible to show light when reverse gear is activate but it's just ideas.
Ps: the speedometer is big but i can reduce some parts like the background and others things, so tell me what do you want. ;)

This looks very nice :)
I have a few suggestions however :
* the speed displayed as a number is not too handy : a speed bar is much more visible, when you are racing you often don't have the time to look at speed numbers. Also we don't have such a LED font, and adding a new font is much work, so I'd like to avoid that if possible ;)
* using a more cartoonish Tux could improve it?

And the buttons when braking or going reverse are sure possible to do, even though I wonder if it might get annoying to see lights appear everytime you brake

Anyway, very nice work :) will keep looking forward to improved versions

Honestly, who watch the speedometer during the game? I think the digital display is better than a speed bar, because it is more in a "racing style" but i understand it's not a priority thing to do.
If the problem is only to make the font i can do it.

Auria {l Wrote}:* using a more cartoonish Tux could improve it?

agreed, at the beginning i wanted to make a tux head on the middle like the older, I'll make it next. ;)

agreed again, light is cool but it's kind of a boring thing if it glowing all the time.

Thanks a lot. :)

This speed indicator is great! I think however better a speed bar instead of dispaying the numbers of km/h. If could be both it will be fantastic, but a speed bar with this design is great too. :D

An important question: Could the icon menù or speed indicator be made with vectorial images instead of png to avoid the pixelize effect that I always see, expecially with hight resolution full screen?

Thank you :)

I don't know anything about making vectorial images, i work only with Gimp sorry. :(
I suppose i can convert png file with inkscape.

Vectorial image is an image that could be resized without lose resolution, like flash app that you see on web for example. The file is .svg (scalable vector graphic) instead of png. You can create this with inkscape, xara and I think with gimp too.

An example:
http://www.openclipart.org/people/inky2010/CHRISTMAS_003.svg

I see the pixels of menù's icons of STK. Using svg you can resize how you like and will always see icons perfectly, without pixel effects.... Did you understand? ;)

I know what is a vectorial image but thank you anyway. I never made an image with inkscape, i work only with Gimp (bitmap editor first) we can't make .svg with Gimp, thats what i mean. ;)

Adding SVG (or any vector format) support to SuperTuxKart would be excessively difficult, and as such we do intend to stay with bitmap formats.

That being said, just make sure that all contributions are large enough, it's easier to scale down than scale up ;)

To the speedometer ... I like the concept of it, but I really miss the old "tf/s" :|
I always translated it with "tuxfeet per second" and was missing that in many other tux games such as Extreme Tux Racer.
It would be great if you could add this :)

Ok I understand so why STK use bitmap files... ok, it was only to know... :)

Maybe both? Numbers in the centre and a curved bar around the speedometer?

Yes, both numbers in the centre and a curved bar around the speedometer, but numbers in the centre are difficoult to do was said, therefore also only the speedometer bar is good the same.

+1 for new speedometer, may be try to make it a bit cartoonish and it'll 100% fit the game :)

Am I the only one satisfied with the current speedometer? :p
I'd really like a more stylish nitro bar though.

Arthur, I love the current speedometer. It is unobtrusive, easy to see, and looks pretty good.
I wholeheartedly agree with you on the nitro bar.

Well, speaking about nitro bar, it is more urgent than new speedometer, but we can't tell Dakal to do this or that ;)

Yes I realize my speedometer is not really good because GUI must be clear first. I already did a nitro bar here but About this bar makes suggestions i'll try to make it. ;)

Yes, I would like to merge the nitro bar, I'll see what I can do to incorporate it soon. But first of all, we will need to know the license you release it under

EDIT: oh, and it needs to be a power-of-two in size, 50x350 is not an acceptable size (64x256 or 64x512 would be)

I updated the size of the gauge with 64x256 and released it with CC By sa 3.0

Very nice, thanks :)

Now, if you don't mind, it would be easier to code in another format : have one PNG that contains only the background, and one PNG that contains only the filling. Would this be possible?

Thanks a lot, committed to SVN :D

nitro bar.jpg

Note: for challenges where you need to collect X points of nitro, we used to draw a red line at the wanted amount of nitro. With this new nitrobar, I simply made the target amount of nitro blue colored, I hope that's fine with you
