Hello everybody,
again I am working on new textures for SuperTuxKart and want to start with a new brick texture:
Old texture (128*128 px):

New texture (512*512 px):

Alternative texture (512*512 px):

I have used this texture as basis:
http://opengameart.org/node/8141License: CC-BY 3.0 (As the OGA-Texture)
Any comments are welcome.

I like it except that it doesn't have the 3D brick look. It looks more like tissue paper. So if the bricks were slightly rounded...

I think is good for STK.

It looks generally good, but I see two main issues :
1) it has darker stripes. This will make the texture repetition very, very easy to spot.
2) The original texture had two bricks large; the new one has ten or more. The result of that is that if we just put your new texture instead of the old one, the areas where the texture was used will end up with tiny, tiny little bricks

I think it would be good if we had both... after all they have different looks to them so you might use if for a different type of track.

I have found no place where the brick texture is used, so I have tried to improve a used texture,
Texturecanyon_water.png (256*256 px == 102,3 KB --> 512*512 px == 249,3 KB)
Old
New
ScreenshotsOld
New
I think it looks more cartoonish. Feedback is appreciated.

I think something blueish would be nice - more like the water in green valley

I like the new one. It's very beautiful and it has a better resolution but maybe it's too greenish

I like the new one water too.
But like samuncle said, a little retouch would be fine.
Like larger and whiter curves ?

Thanks for your feedback!
Here is a new approach:
Texture
Sceenshot
I am not happy with the brightness/hue but I would like to hear what you think of that approach anyway.
Anyone who likes the "old" one more?

It's very, very blue ^^ Maybe you could tweak the color a little. But apart from that I think it's an improvement over the original one
You still release your textures under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license?

I like the design a lot. I think it's a huge improvement. Though, I agree that use should also make a version that is less bright.
If you want to do a green variant, here is a pic of the grand canyon.

If you could make that animated, it would be amazing.
As a still texture, it looks very good!

Why less bright ? Because the rest of landscape has horrible dull colors ?
I agree that the texture of the water needs some adjustments, but now it's the other textures that should be adjusted accordingly. To better match to the desired graphics. I think.
What a wonderful mix of colors !

I prefer this color but I agree with Auria.
This testure is best for "Old Island" or "The Beach", I Think.

When I see it, I think tropical waters.
http://depositphotos.com/3643550/stock- ... water.html It would look great as a river on a tropical island into the ocean or as an oasis.

If the texture for wall of the canal could be changed to reflect the new water textue a bit, maybe it would integrate better?
Also, the sky has a reddish tinge and the water a yellowish tinge, if that would match batter, it could also help.

Ok ok, so I would say that the texture below is the better solution.
fraang, you should break just a little the continuity of white waves / reflections.

Ok some news:
First the darker water:
Texture

Second some variants:
Canyon

Swamp

Tropical

And last but not least a first try to animate the water (not seamless, 8 frames):
EDIT:About the license: Yes CC-BY-SA 3.0 is fine.

Thanks, committed!
We however cannot use this animation. We already have what is needed to make animated water in-game, so instead the track should be re-exported to use the tools we already have

Anyone has a screenshot of the brick texture in action? I am too lazy to do it myself. ;-)

Good work, fraang. Think you could do some retexture work on the canyon? I've always found the painted desert beautiful
http://pencilsharpener.org/travel/Roadt ... desert.jpg or
http://d1vmp8zzttzftq.cloudfront.net/wp ... 0x1066.jpg. Doing a search for painted desert I actually stumbled on this
