Totoplus62 (little) contributions

Postby Totoplus62 » 17 Nov 2012, 19:42

Hi, everybody. I will post there my contributions :D

So this afternoon i spent some time to make a new icon for swatter (because the original is a little bit uggly) this one has transparency with holes and I wanted to give it a small "plastic" effect
Image

Next, for futur arenas or other game mode (or everything you want !... even nothing !) I made this model of coin with a little "brushed steel" effect
Image
Of cource a coin hasn't this size in a game ^^

I hope you will enjoy them otherwise it does not matter :)

Hello

The swatter looks nice. In my opinion you can add a dark outline around it.
The coin also looks nice, but we don't have the time (and the programmers) to program new features. But however if one day we need a coin texture ;).

You can also try to make other icons and textures.

hey thanks, especially the swatter icon! I'm personally not convinced we need a black outline to be honest, none of our weapon icons has a black outline (even though it looks quite good with one, so I might nonetheless use it ^^)

Just a little question, do you agree to release this image under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license ( http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ ), or another license of your choice?

I agree with Auria. However I think if we want a dark outline maybe it would be better with airbrush. A sort of a blurry shadow.

As far as I know you don't have to sign up (if you do I've probably broken the law for months) but just note it at the end and preferable give a link to the site or a copy of the license.

You can also use CC-BY 3.0 (my fave) or GNU GPL 2 (2.0).

You don't have to register or anything, if we like them we'll add them ;)

you said "you can do whatever you want with it", does that mean you agree to the CC-0 terms? http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/

Thanks a lot anyway :)

I made that original "ugly" swatter icon ^^.
For reference and comparison, here it is:
Image

I made it with Inkscape in SVG vectorial format, which means it can be scaled at any size without pixellisation problems.
I am interested in your (totoplus62) opinion on why you find it "ugly".
As for your contribution, we should see how it would fit inside the game, at the top of the screen. IMHO you need to cut the stick for it to fit. It could be interesting to replace the white (your version) or black (my version) holes with transparent, "alpha=0", versions in the game.
I am not convinced with the black border you made because I find it not smooth enough, and the holes are not regularly spaced (maybe that's not a problem for other people? just a matter of opinion). Again, we should see how it fits in the game (just a screenshot of the game with your icon over it would be enough).
However, I prefer the plastic look you gave it, due to the lighting on the borders.

I hope we can get to a compromise :)

I said "ugly" because i don't know any other word in english--> So i add: "a little bit"
I don't want to create problems at all ! O_o
I said that because for me we should not delete the "Handle ?"
I don't force anybody to keep mine :) and if you have ideas of other icon or texture to change, i will ear you. A compromise is possible :) i will let you the .xcf file (you can change yours or/and mine)

"the holes are not regularly spaced"-->i fix it:

(better black outline version) Image

Insid the game: (--> before fixing the swatter ^^ sorry for that)

I've edited it a bit. I didn't like the "pencil look" black outline but I do think we should have something. So I've added a shadow into this. Pretty easy. Just double the layers, make one grayscale, blur it, punch out the holes and you have it.

Funto, I prefer the new icon simply because IMO it's more like our other weapons icons. Your icon was not bad but had a thick black outline, which none of our other icons have. I am personally quite happy with the version that I included in the game yesterday :)

hero : none of our other weapon icons have such an heavy shadow. So I don't think it fits.

What I did is I slightly blended the version with a black outline in the version without an outline, to get a very subtle outline that I think looks good in-game

Ok then, I hope it looks good in game.
I've just had a look at it here: http://supertuxkart.svn.sourceforge.net ... sion=11986
It seems you cropped the top-right border.
The holes are transparent, good :)
I understand if my icon didn't fit, I just didn't noticed it and didn't get any feedback back then about it ^^

above, the transparent parts of the holes don't look quite centred, and the holes aren't centred on the swat - any chance of fixing this?

I don't think that's quite visible in-game. Though if we get a version with this minor issue fixed, why not!

Just to make sure if it's the one with the shadows that's mine and since it doesn't have anything to do with the game it doesn't need to be fixed. But there are problems in both.

I made this one; the hole are more centered on the swatter (and space between two holes is the same)

Well I think Binky meant that the shadow was not correctly centered inside holes, not that the holes needed to be moved.

In any case, the core team members are happy with the previous version of the swatter, you can try to make better versions if you wish but we are not asking you to do so, we are happy with your contribution already!

I personally prefer the previous version with a little shadow, without shadow this one looks a little flat. Also the previous version looked more similar to the 3D swatter model. In short, I think you are trying to improve something that was already just good ;)
