New Floor texture to Oliver Math track.

Postby Chumbalumba » 15 Sep 2012, 21:03

I made a new texture to Oliver Math track.

Put this file in (Windows 7 64): C:\Program Files (x86)\SuperTuxKart-0.7.3\data\tracks\olivermath

I like it, but it doesn't look right next to the walls - Maybe the walls should be redrawn/replaced?

Hi,

I agree that the original texture is not very good, but sorry I don't think this replacement is better. It appears to only be a grey color with some noise on it. We can certainly do better than that

I agree, but this is my first texture, I'll make a change.

it's definitely progress in the right direction :) though it somehow has a "paper" feel which I'm not fully sure suits a ground? In any case, 256x256 is probably a little low on today's hardware for something that will be as visible as ground?

How about a tiled floor?
Maybe carpet tiles?

Carpet sounds like a better idea if the level is truely a classroom setting.

This is much, much better :)

just a few things though :
1) your texture is 1024x768. Textures need to be power-of-two in size, for instance 512x512 or 1024x1024.
2) we usually like to also have a lossless image (e.g. PNG) and not only jpeg

thanks

I like it although given the texture's size/detail, it could be scaled down in the track (i.e. I'd rather not be able to see any pixels in the detail).

That's not very constructive...

It fits perfectly. What colour do you expect a classroom floor to be?

I think it'd look a lot better applied with a different scale, so you can see more of the detail at once. Although it should be, as Auria points out, 1024x1024.

Gee, a school with carpet? I've never seen that; neither in Germany nor in Australia. I'd say the new texture looks pretty good - once we have it in the right size.

All schools around here have vinyl or other synthetic floor materials. Carpet floors are generally less hygienic. But oh well, we don't have to clean textures for skid marks; luckily they go away by themselves. ;)

"carpet" and "speed" don't really go together.

School carpet tiles, can be some of the least fluffy imaginable...

*grin* Perhaps our installer should ask: did you have carpet at school? And then pick the corresponding texture.

That would certainly be a very unique installer questions - I would love to see the face of people when this question pops up ;)

At least we understand now why there are so many different opinions about this floor ;)

Joerg, that's a disgraceful comment. What horribly low standards.

The installer should check for a 3d printer. If unavailable, it should bluescreen. If available, it should print off the 2 textures (as if bump mapped) and ask the user to select which texture most accurately represents the floor of their school. Then it should assign the texture in game.

Do it properly, or refuse to let the player play at all. *folds arms*
