what kind of buildings did you have in mind?
I think of cobblestone paths and houses with flower pots myself..

Buildings can probably be borrowed from 0 A.D. Next alpha release will introduce Romans, so seems like it would be a good time to get some high-quality stuff from there.

Would I be current day Roman ruins or take place in the past?
I would suggest making the track go through the Colosseum/arena.
Also it would be nice to add some Roman countryside with an aquaduct and rows of olive trees or a vineyard.
By the way my tip for track making not to start with a layout, but rather with a series of views, like movie shots.

That's not in Rome, nor is it roman, since it was built in the 12th century.

STK does not need to be realistic though

I do believe there's difference between realism and correctness. To make a believable world there have to be some rules.

Don't worry too much, I know there are many people who want new material, and we are grateful for those of you who are artistic enough to be able to make it for us!!!
Thank you!!

This track needs some Italian music. You could stick to italian composers like Domenico Scarlatti, but I suggest using the work of a frenshman: "Toreador theme" from Bizet's Carmen opera.

There is of course also the option to have the karts enter the Arena and drive 3/4 of a track there, and then exit again. There could be a horse-kart race happening, and the (smaller) karts would have to make sure not to collide with the horse-karts. Though admittedly it would be difficult to model and animate good looking horses.
Cheers,
Joerg

If you make some music that fits with this, I will gladly use it

I am having a problem with vertex painting. it looks fine in blender, but in the track the colors are not right and they don't cover there entire area they are supposed to.

I could fix the last problem but subdividing the painted areas but that would make a lot more faces so I am not sure if it is worth it. Any help?

The fix I have for now is to select all faces in Vertex paint mode and hit Shift-K to set the color uniformously. Unfortunately I don't understand how blender stores vertex colors internally
