China Track

Hi
After some failed trials, a first version my new China track is driveable on STK 0.73 (compiled trunk)

-What gives me everytime troubles is the lap counting, despite I copied the this lap special line from Scotland lap.
-Another strange thing is that no textures from the base folder \data\textures is used, so I copied the needed textures to China track instead.
-How does this work with this *_alpha.png files? Some things seem to be changed for 0.73.
-For the screenshot, I need also some help, I get just white pictures when I press print-screen. All I can offer is a screenshot from blender.
-The license file is in progress.

Cheers

Hi Canis Lupus, nice to see you keep making tracks for STK :)
Very nice work here, as your other tracks ^^

Here are my (little) suggestions of improvements :
- The green textures on the mountains are very repetitive, I think they don't take advantage enough of the topology's potential (and are a little dull),
- Could you add a checkered start-line ?
- maybe it also needs more bonuses, but I think you already planned to change that...

If you feel like adding some stunts and funny features, don't hesitate (examples here) !

Keep us informed !

PS. I'm sorry, I cannot answer to any of your questions... :(

Hi,

I need to check

Canis Lupus {l Wrote}:-Another strange thing is that no textures from the base folder \data\textures is used, so I copied the needed textures to China track instead.

Hmnm weird, can you clarify what happens?

Canis Lupus {l Wrote}:-How does this work with this *_alpha.png files? Some things seem to be changed for 0.73.

this is optional, and can be used to compress with JPEG images with an alpha channel (but since JPEG has no alpha channel support the alpha channel must be in a separate file). This is optional and PNG files are still supported.

Nice work in progress otherwise

Really nice work. Here are a few suggestions. How about adding some of the famous terraced landscaping to some of the hills, and maybe a giant Hindu statue on a hill:

Hi,

it looks like there is some incorrect vertices in one of the meshes. Details in my answer in the ticket:
https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/super ... ticket/442

Let me know if you can identify the mesh with the information provided in the ticket and if this issue is solved this way.

Cheers,
Joerg

Sorry

I have overseen some vertices far outside the track.
Should be solved soon.

I'm sure, that the lap check line problem is simple tosolve, but I just don't see it.
The picture shows what I've done:

Religious Symbols is something I would prefere to avoid, even if it's Buddha, who seems to be very tolerant.
I would prefere a cute Panda waving at the roudside.

But the Idee of the rice terrace is something I will do. (They look in Vietnam, Bali or China all the same.)

Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Hi Canis Lupus,

you made the checkline activate the lapline, but did you make the lapline activate the checkline? See the 2 screenshots under http://supertuxkart.sourceforge.net/Tra ... p_Counting (PS: unless you want to release your track for STK 0.7.2 users, you can use Blender 2.5 now)

Less religious but equally distinctive - and could look great if done right - might be a few terracota soldiers from the infamous Terracotta Army.

Nice start, but I have a few recommendations that I think could improve this track

Why you don't use a better texture with a bigger resolution ? And avoid a single color texture (for the junk's sailing). You can also use advanced effects like billboards for the Chinese Lanterns. For the bridge and trees you can see my track (zen garden) for inspiration. In the minigolf you have a nice water example.

You should use photos reference for buildings and landscapes (see here: ha long bay, a junk and a street). For optimization you could use Level Of Detail see in wiki how you can use it (don't forget the netbook ;))

I like the Great Wall of China :)

The plan for the china track was to build rocks, green hills as in Guangxi: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li_River,_Guangxi
I have to confess, that my track looks now a bit different. The water and tree textures are to tricky for me. I could not get them to work anymore correct for the 0.73 version. To refound all the buttons in the new blender is hard enough.
Is there a way, how I can import other tracks for comparing how things are done right?

To convertion of the china track to blender 2.59 was of limited success. At least the lap counting works now.
All the new properties, checkboxes and buttons are very amazingly cool. To switch on rain or snow with just one button click was very funny. Also the bananas and herings are much simpler now.
The water property is something I don't understand, when I change the type from object to water, I don't see any water anymore. When I set it to None and have the material.xml emty, the splash works.
When I try to use the common textures from data/textures, the planes stay white and there is a message on the console like picture.png not found. The solution of this problem would also be a solution for my trouble with the transparent tree textures.
What I miss most in the new blender is the import button to import other project for comparing.

So far, I didn't find the time to add some pandas, bambus or rice terases to the track, but I haven't forgotten it.

Hi,

you can see the blend files of other tracks in the media repository : http://supertuxkart.sourceforge.net/Media_Repo

regarding water, did you make sure the water object has a size of (1,1,1) and rotation of (0,0,0)? I believe the water effect only works well in those conditions

the problem with splash only working when material.xml is empty is because when you don't empty it, track-specific settings override the global settings. So the solution atm is just to re-configure the splash in your own project

and I'm glad you like the new blender panel :)

After long time my China track is finished, more or less as usualy.
As suggested I added some rice fields, as I've seen them in Bali. and some Pandas as I've seen them in internet.
Maybe I added to many details to the track now, but I liked the Pandas and the Ming vase to much.
I've tried to add a downloaded sound file from http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Disen ... agroove_17
I hope this is ok with the licence, which is always a nightmare.
The convertion from mp3 to ogg was propably not a success, and also the sound file might be too long.

I really liked playing with the new property panel, despite I edited the material file often in the notepad afterward.
In my opinion would rain look good for the china track.

good work. I think this track should be uploaded to the add-ons website, as is now our way to handle new contents

Hi all...

I don't understand the problem! :!:

I've downloaded the file, run "gksudo nautilus" to bring up a root window, transferred the file from "downloads" to the "Tracks" folder and every time I get an "X" on the "China" folder. As a result, it won't show up in the game. I've done it this way before and was able to transfer files just fine... :!:

EDIT: Ok, I was able to fix the problem by adding permissions although I don't know why I was required to do this...I never had to before. :(
Also, the map doesn't show up on any of the add-on tabs, only "All." On a lighter note, I thought the map was very beautiful and very well done! :)

Regards...

I like the track :D it should defiantly be added to addons, but first, it should have a better screenshot. the current one is obviously taken in blender.

The screenshot is really from blender. Somehow I am not able to make a screenshot in Windows Vista of STK, since the switch to Irlicht. I were glad if somebody else could take a screenshot.
I were also glad if somebody could test the track with Linux. It to easy to make upper and lower case spelling mistakes with filenames in Windows.
The music file is probably also worth a discussion. I don't really understand if the licence from :http://freemusicarchive.org/music is fine and my experience with ogg files is also low.
