It would appear that I am wrong anyway. There are two types of pyramids and the
Egyptian Pyramids would seem to be intentionally sloped (as opposed to slopped due to degradation), in contrast to
Mexican Pyramids which are stepped.
However, I was also going to say your fears for polycounts are unfounded. The Pyramid steps of a typical Mexican Pyramid are not going to be particularly high with only 10 or so steps. Each step can be done with 8 quads.
