Bouncing Ball New Texture

Re: Bouncing Ball New Texture

Postby Hero » 30 Nov 2012, 00:05

I'll see what I can do.

I've been doing JPG because that was the original format. I will only recognise the name with .jpg at the end.

Yes I can change the size.

The reason the lines look like that is:

1. because of the resoloution.

2. because I use pencil. I then blur the line. Will do it without this time.

Yes it is educational thanks. Once this is accepted/downright refused I'll take a L-O-N-G break to forget anything I've learned.

OF COURSE I feel up to it. Or rather I feel like doing it. I don't know if I can produce anything good...

So mostly image problems? Okay, off to work!

Howdy everyone,

Okay, here goes:

I've turned up the definition to 512 x 512.

Sharpened the lines.

Made a version with out SuperTuxKart.

You're still using jpegs for what should be a png.

It's much closer, but again I think you're just rushing it and not setting yourself the appropriate standard. You've just upscaled it all as-is, you haven't even bothered to redo the text so a lot of the pixel problems still exist.

bball1scale.png

You can preview this in GIMP btw using Filter > Map > Map Object... and select sphere and adjust the rotation in the Orientation tab.

Don't just react to what people tell/ask you. Ask yourself, is there anything that could be improved? The text in this version is a great example - there are other issues.

And I know it all takes time, but it took me 5 minutes to do the paths (or you could even do it with the free select tool), fill the resulting selects, then copy/paste/transform/move them, turn the result into a mask, then slap in some basketball-like colour.

Hah. Friendly warning! The cage transform tool in GIMP is likely to crash it, so be sure to save your work before you use it. I just wasted 10 minutes creating a nice 1024x1024 basketball texture and hadn't saved it yet, before attempting to warp the text. D'oh!

This would not replace the bowling ball, but the rubber ball. And it's not finished yet ;)

Ludsky {l Wrote}:I don't like this basket ball, not beautiful, texture no good for me, i prefer bowling ball

1) People don't want to change bowling ball :D
2) everything would be better to replace bouncing ball
3) Just few balls can bounce... it can be dangerous with bowling ball
4) Not finished yet...
5) You can try to make one ;)
6) Btw don't think bownling ball is the best texture of the game

To hero and charlie: that's nice :) (but don't put a text !)

Thanks,

Okay I'll REDO the text and at the same type make a version with out it.

As I said before I have NO power over the extension type. I can send you any format you wish for but none except for .jpg extension will work and Windows machines won't want to be introduced to the wrong extension. I can do it on Linux but it stays on Linux and this game is multi-platform. So for now we need to use .jpg so the game recognises the texture. JPG in this case is part of the name.

Yes this is not the most beautiful texture, and yes I really like the bowling ball (it's my favourite) but we're NOT replacing it! This is our hopeful for the bouncing ball. The bowling ball will stay the bowling ball.

What are you talking about? PNG is as multi-platform as JPEG...

Why do you think anything non-jpeg will not work on Windows? What on earth made you think that? Half of the textures in STK are PNG (which you could tell if you followed the SVN link I provided earlier).

As for creating a PNG, you just export to PNG, it is as simple as that.

Re: Bouncing Ball New Texture

Hey, hey, hey, I already through this through, I always use .png for my games and I know what the texture demographic is. My point is that STK recognises textures by name (unless it has pixel recognition built in in which case I'm sunk). Unfortunately it seems that .jpg may be part of the game. I'll put it to a simple test though.

They would work on Windows. My point is that I could in theory name .pngs as .jpgs. Linux is fine with this but Windows is incredibly picky. I don't know about Mac.

Yeah, I create them all the time.

I'll try it out just to make sure STK can't get the right one. Maybe you're right and I'm wrong. But let's find out. :D

UPDATE: Just checked and I'm right. Sorry. I just had to tell you. ;) The ball is pretty much white.

It is a bit tiring pointing out glaring problems to you. Look at the right/bottom edges. Tell me if you think that's good enough.

Still, it is better. Still, you should be using/understanding PNG.

Thanks, I've run through the entire layer and have eliminated most of the pixel problems. I've also taken out "The Dots". And I'm sorry.

If you want you can save a PNG of anything you want, call it ball.png and put it in the models folder. Then you can remove the .jpg ball texture. Play STK and watch for the white ball.

Oh, so your issue is that it isn't picked up in game... well, why didn't you say?

STK may be good but it is still a computer program. It can't magically know that a filename has changed. You have to tell it that it has changed. I don't have time to find out how you change it, maybe somebody else can point out.

Maybe I will make a texture tomorrow :).

It's Funny, it corresponds more to STK. Really GooD

But all the weapons are real objects, this one is ... different :?

The thing is is that we don't have spiky bubblegum lying around, so this would look good as nolok's ball.

It might work with a sort of lava texture... (Lava demon?)

My point exactly! I CAN export the b3d with different information to do it but as I said quite a few times before I don't have source and I don't know if the animation is part of the program, b3d or not there at all (physics). Also to get an identical unwrap... I'll see what I can do with OO.org...

I can name it ball.jpg and it's there. But ball.png doesn't work. Everything works fine but for export in .png. Name whatever you want ball.jpg and it will show that image.

Okay, OpenOffice could read it (GO OPENOFFICE!) but unfortunately it couldn't read about 1000 odd characters. I was able to edit the ".jpg" to ".png" but saving made the b3d unreadable by STK as it was missing the vital characters.

OK, what next? Anything else to do to the texture or is it ready to be turned down yet? ;)

If anyone has a program that can textually edit and read a .b3d file please tell me. A new month of download begins tomorrow. :D

Thanks,
Hero

Submit a bug request asking for the ball .blend, as I'm not sure the devs are reading this thread.

you currently need to convert the image to jpg to test it in-game but I just don't see this as any kind of major issue. Once you have the lossless version of the image it's easy to convert it to whatever format needed. This model is just a sphere, there is really no sense in requesting a blend file. Just add a ball in blender and apply the texture to it. This is IMO irrelevant to picking a texture however the file format can be decided upon when we chose a texture. While the texture is still work-in-progress I think there is no use in arguing over the format

Regarding the texture, recent iterations have improved but to be fair I'm not convinced with the brown "blurred noise" texture for the ball

Here is another reason. Blender doesn't seem to like to unwrap properly no matter how I go through the process.

I'm working on finding my way around it but I don't know if it's possible. If there's source ANYWHERE please tell me.
