Privacy by default

Privacy by default is slightly leaky in STK:

  • When you click “connect to Internet”, the checkbox “Send anonymous HW stats” is enabled immediately. The user has no chance of knowing it earlier because it is invisible before you enable “connect to Internet”. This checkbox should be off by default
  • When Internet connection is enabled, all new profiles have the tab “New online account” selected. The pre-selected tab for new profiles should be offline by default nonetheless. It's simpler that way anyway. The only exception should be for the greeting/privacy dialog which appears when you open STK 0.9.3 the very first time and you click yes.
  • The checkboxes “connect to Internet” and “send anonymous HW stats” could use some useful tooltips. It's not clear what exactly these options imply.

Are you aware of other instances in which privacy by default is leaky?

I appreciate your concern for privacy and that's why the options are there, but we're pretty sure that a huge portion of our users are interested in networked multiplayer, if we make offline accounts by default we'll probably confuse a lot of those users who will want to use theur account for multiplayer. Creating new accounts happens only once for most players, privacy-concerned players can simply switch to the other tab...

Well, there's the possibility to turn an offline account into an online account later, right?

Will accounts be mandatory for online play?

An account is needed for WAN play, but not for LAN play.
Not an official dev, but a huge fan of STK!
