Problems changing screen resolution

Problems changing screen resolution

Postby hadg » 28 Dec 2010, 17:30

Hi everyone,

I ran into the following problem after creating a dual-head setup, i.e. two monitors attached to one PC.

The X server operates the two monitors (1400x900 and 2048x1536) as one big screen (3448x1536). I would like to run STK on one screen, e.g. in window mode at 2048x1536. However, in the Options dialogue I'm only given the option 3448x1536 (see screenshot).

Ironically, at this point, I'm staring at a window of almost 2048x1536, so the menu interface is actually showing exactly as I would want to see it. However, once the game starts...

The game runs in a window, but the view is cropped. The cart is centred in the window, but the text is not; the radar/map is partially visible; the speed gauge and nitro bar are cropped out; and most annoyingly of all, I can't see what's in the bonus boxes. :)

Any attempts to run fullscreen result in an image stretched over two monitors and missing the bottom left-hand corner (1400x900 screen doesn't do the full 1536px height). No surprises there, really, and no solutions either.

Questions:

1) Is there any way I can force a screen resolution, e.g. in a configuration file? I found a file called stk_config.xml but nothing there about resolutions.

2) Where does STK get the information about possible screen resolutions from? I.e., how does it "know" that 3448x1536 is the only possible resolution? (Or, when running on single monitor and showing options like 1400x900, 1024x768 etc., where did it get those from?) N.B. an answer here might help me solve the problem "globally" in case other games do the same.

Suggestions to the developers:

1) Perhaps some reasonably safe resolutions e.g. 800x600 (maybe 1024x768?) could be made available always (see my first screenshot)? That is, irrespectively of any information STK has about monitor setup. This way, people with weird setups can always fall back on (windowed) standard resolutions.

2) Dreaming away now: when the game is running in windowed mode, surely it should be possible for the window to be resizeable (optionally: on-the-fly)? :)

All help/feedback welcome.

And, since this is my first post: a big THANK YOU to all the developers, past and present, for making this awesome game! :)

Hi,

first of all, you can force a resolution in ~/.config/supertuxkart . Indeed I am thinking about allowing in the options to allow specifying other sizes in window mode.

About getting the list of available resolutions, we rely on irrlicht for that. It might be appropriate to file a bug report to irrlicht devs so that dual setups become supported

and I have no idea if irrlicht supports resizable windows, sorry :)
