Discord is also a proprietary program that people are becoming way too dependent on. IRC does the job just fine without any proprietary dependencies (#supertuxkart on irc.freenode.net), so what do you need Discord for?

We actually do have an unofficial Discord server, at https://discord.gg/m272UTf
However, most of the team is not there, development chat happens on IRC as mentioned above, and we don't advertise the channel explicitly. I'm usually around there and can answer some questions about the game, but refer to IRC if you want to chat with most of team.

IRC is extremely user-unfriendly. Discord is extremely user-friendly. To compare: mailing lists vs forums as seen by computer illiterate people. But IRC is worse. The hoops you have to jump through to be able to read messages that were posted while you were offline are ridiculous.

Thanks for having an (inofficial) discord.

1. Go to http://webchat.freenode.net/
2. Pick a nickname, any nickname
3. Type "#supertuxkart" in the "channels" box

The hoops you have to jump through to be able to read messages that were posted while you were offline are ridiculous.

What? No, that's by design. IRC is a method of instant chat, for the here and now. You're not supposed to keep and read archives of every conversation that's ever happened. It's like talking in a room, if you're not in the IRC channel, you're not supposed to see it.

Long-term communication is what mailing lists and forums are for. Or if you want to keep it in short snippets, micro-blogging services like GNU Social.

For #supertuxkart, logs are at http://irc.wxm.be/logs/.

Sounds like you did not try Discord or not long enough to see the benefits (search, somewhat useful UI) or have a really spartan set of needs.

Nice. Unfortunately horrible compared to having the ability to see history in the exact same UI and being able to search from that same UI though.

You can just use Ctrl + F in your browser to search the IRC logs, and I've done that many times. However it kinda requires you to know which month something was said, and at least a couple exact words. But the Discord search I don't find very good either, the UI for the search is not great (though usable) and I often get quite a few irrelevant results. Though that may have been me searching for too generic terms.

There is also the Matrix.org IRC bridge, but I'm afraid it's kinda unreliable.

No, I've begrudgingly used Discord before because others insisted on it. They rejected my valid riseup.net email address, it's slow, I don't want to search for things said months ago, voice chat didn't work reliably, the stupid invites expire, and you can't just remember the channel name, you have to make an account with them.

Even discounting all that, it's a proprietary program, and I don't want proprietary software on my system if I can avoid it. I can't stand it when people force me to run a proprietary program on my computer to talk to them; it's just a bad way to treat someone.

https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode ... pertuxkart is a lot better UI-wise, don't know why onpon4 recommended http://webchat.freenode.net/ as it has a much worse UI.

Or, if you want a more-Discord-like experience with history, try <https://riot.im/app/#/room/#freenode_#supertuxkart:matrix.org>

The cool thing about IRC is that it is a protocol, not a service, so you can use many different clients, similar to how you can use different browsers to access a website because they all use the same protocol (HTTP/HTTPS).

I only pointed to that because it's the most obvious choice. I'm not a fan of JavaScript clients in general and do not use them; my preferred IRC client is HexChat.
