STK kart 3D printing

Postby fabton » 13 Sep 2016, 15:40

Hi everybody

My son (almost 4 years old) is a real fan of STK... We can play together during hours !

As a gift for his next birthday (24 september), I would like to offer him some little toys from the game.

I am note a blender specialist... but I would like to use the .blend file from some karts (GNU, Tux, Nolok and) to print 3D models (in 1 color is ok !).

I have no idea of how i can perform that !!!

It could be some real nice STK goodies !!!! ;)

If you don't have a 3d printer and don't know where to use one, go in a fablab.
You will have to use CURA or ReplicatorG or another one, it depends on each fablab.
You can come with your blend file just in case but 3d printing softwares use stl and obj files.
Usually there's always someone in a fablab, at who you can ask advices. But i think there are some good tutos with pictures on the web.
Because maybe you'll have to cut somes extremities of the 3d model, extremities which have no support and can run while printing. And stick parts after it's printed and cold. (maybe useless with a luxury/nextgen 3d printer, but in Europe i've never seen a such printer in a fablab ^^)
If that's so (depends on the character) don't hesitate to tell us which parts we have to cut if you think you can't do it.
The main difficulty is the cockpit i think, too much cavities.
If you want it wheels to roll you'll obviously have to separate these parts from the main mesh.

I think Suzanne, Tux, the new Wilber, Xue and the current Elephpant are the easier for printing.

STK goodies is a fun idea if it wouldn't go too far. ^^

I would be pleased to provide you some blend files but i prefer wait the main devteam permission.

All blend files are available in our media repo:
https://sourceforge.net/p/supertuxkart/ ... dia/trunk/

I suppose that you will need to convert the model to .step or .scad format, or something similar. At least all machines for bending sheet metal use .step format. I don't have any experience with 3d printing.

You can export the .obj file from Blender, then import it in Freecad and save it in proper format. And then find someone with 3d printer ;)

I am really interested in your results :)

Finding where to print is not very difficult (fablab, webservice with delivery)...

Blender can export STL file and the BLEND files are easy to find on the STK repo mentionned by DEVE.

What is very difficult for me is to find what i have to do with BLEND file to have a good result and I never used BLENDER before...

Don't know if this 3D printing service is available in Europe, but they have given a nice guide for how to export a .blend file for 3D printing: http://www.shapeways.com/tutorials/prepping_blender_files_for_3d_printing

This sounds like a cool idea! Please post some pictures of the finished product once you get it! :D
