[Dead] German-speaking SuperTuxKart Forum

Hello everyone

Some members here will of course remember --> There was once a german-speaking STK community on the Games4Mac board. Unfortunately Games4Mac closed finally the doors two or three years ago. The forum itself was increasingly worse visited even some time before the closing. But nevertheless, the forum was able to build up a community.
I'd like to start an experiment.

I wrote the following text some time ago in an other post:
XGhost {l Wrote}:The german-speaking STK forum was a very active and lively place (*comment: increasingly worse at the end...) with experienced moderators (*comment: hey Xeno ;) ) and many contributors. I've learned English in school but I wasn't able to understand the discussions on this forum good enough. The german STK forum was my way to interact and share experience, opinions, feedbacks and contributions with other people / STK fans or developers. Now: the german STK forum is dead and I think there are some people who switched to the official one (this one right here).
What I am trying to say is: STK is a game made for children (ok maybe for adults too ;) . At least it is child-oriented.) and not all young people are able to speak/read english fluently which could be a reason why the forum is not so active. It would be awesome if some people here would take the effort to create sites or forums for STK in different languages. The STK website could also need some fresh translations :D ...

What I'm planning to do:
  • Setting up a german-speaking forum for STK --> I will do that on the same server where I host my website too.
  • Translate as many topics from the STK wiki as possible to the german language.
  • Creating tutorials for artistic work for STK (karts, tracks, library objects ...).
  • Creating (and also link to) coding tutorials for C, C++, and how to get started with the source of STK.

The goal:
  • Recruiting new contributors for STK! My native language is German (ok, this is a lie --> it's swiss german. And yes, this is different :D ). I'd like to attract people from this little spot on the earth (Switzerland, Germany, Austria) to STK.
  • Of course advertise STK wherever I can.

What I will need:
  • YOU! I'll need people who help me creating content. I'll need active people who are able to operate as moderators on the forum. +++

If you are interested, please share your thoughts! Don't mind leaving suggestions, ideas or feedback here!

Hey !
I am German too, I would help you creating this website and content for this lovely !
It would be a great Idea, to set up a german speaking forum, and a wiki about Supertuxkart, because I had a lot issues creating a track.
I will send you an E-Mail with the Name of my Skype acc.
Then its much more easier to create and manage this Project, If you want.
I would translate the English STK Wiki articles, and creating new ones.

I dont know, but I think maybe we have to ask the "Owner" of STK to create this project.

Thanks for your interest! I will reach out to you soon.

Thank you for mentioning that. --> I would like to get some thoughts of the devs too. I will also be on IRC more frequently.
First of all it's an experiment. I don't expect that there will grow a community within a short space of some days. I don't even know if there is enough interest on the STK.players side. The only way to find out is getting started.

Some news from my side...
I have set up a german speaking STK board. You can reach it with following link:
http://board.creative-forge.ch/

You are free to register there. I will also writing more tutorials the next few days.

@Martin Ziegler, I've written you an E-Mail through this forum few days ago, because I don't use Skype.

Grüezi mitenand
I get the impression that STK is somewhat popular in our small country.

On topic, I think you're doing a great job there, XGhost. As you wrote, community hubs in your native language can be very nice, not only for a game with kid-friendly content.

Those tutorials you posted look excellent (as far as I can tell). You mentioned plans to translate articles from the dev's wiki, while your first guides look like original work. I guess the translating and merging can be useful in both directions ;)

One detail I noticed are inconsistencies when addressing the reader: Formal ("Sie"), informal ("Du") or as compromise, plural ("Ihr"), just like a tutor that addresses a group of students. When I had a look at the German translation strings of the game content, I have seen (and hopefully fixed) similar issues. (There were also some amusingly weird lines, but that's another topic.) I guess for this style of game, the informal "Du" is just fine, but of course, the choice is up to you.

I don't know the dev's opinion about foreign language communities, but I am pretty sure they are open and welcoming to such projects. After all, they have done their best to support translations in-game, too. I can imagine that those translated game strings could even include some urls of approved foreign language fan sites.

Hey, nice idea, I'm from germany, too. :) But I'm not very talented in programming or in creation of tracks. But I would help you otherwise, too, if you want. ;)

I expect that just being active on the board will help for starters :)

I have a bad German pronunciation, there is an accent. I recently found my German tutor. I have online lessons via Skype. Before that, I tried many online services and offline courses and found that learning online is the best option for me. So, I suggest you find your tutor at Preply online tutoring service. You have a lot of opportunities to learn languages and improve your communication skills

As we had recently an ad-bot pushing this topic up again, I thought I could give you an update from my side (op) to prevent confusion:
I didn't remember this thread actually exists, so keep in mind this attempt to gather German-speaking STK contributors is 4 years old and basically dead at this point. I didn't put much effort in it as I had barely the time to do so. I don't really see the strategy of creating a separate board of great value anymore. Didn't think about this properly, but it would've been much better hitting up a big already existing open-source interested community and motivate people there (something like "Linux Guides" did quite a while ago) for the game. That was also how the German-speaking STK community at "Games4Mac" initially developed.

In conclusion, STK has this forum, irc and now also Discord which gathered quite a lot of people in the recent years. There are better ways to connect with people and contributors than this attempt :) . So I'll let this thread die a natural death ;)

Cheers
