Question about new characters

Question about new characters

Postby mfuhrmann » 29 May 2015, 09:18

Hey guys,

I read about your project at G+ and an idea occurred to me. I'm involved in an open source project called OpenNMS and we will do a one-week DevJam in a few weeks. I'm searching for projects and my idea was, to develop a fun character for your project. The OpenNMS project has a mascot called Ulf (https://plus.google.com/103841818268198364395/posts) which is "worldwide known" (just kidding), but Ulf is getting more and more popular.
I fully realise that the main characters provided in all Tux Racer games are many times better known as our Ulf...

...so my question is:
Is it imaginable for you?
Even if the character isn't popular like the well-known ones?

I don't want suggest this idea in our community, if you don't accept this idea and there is no chance for Ulf.

Greetings

Marcel

Hi :)

I'm the Art director of STK so you reached the right person :).

Let me explain Currently there is no "strong rules" about characters. There is basically "2 levels" in which a character can be released.

* You can do your own character and simply submit it to addons.supertuxkart.net. It will be reviewed (we can't accept offensive, violent content, etc) and if it passes these simples tests well everyone with the game and an internet access can download and play with your characters (you can even do tracks with the same system).
* If your character is good enough and if you ask us we can eventually include him/her in the core game. Which means he/she will become officially part of SuperTuxKart.

Now to be included in the addons it's basically we include everything as long as it's not offensive/violent/etc. To be included in the core game, the main rule is it should be an open source project mascot and the quality should be at least equivalent to Tux, Amanda, Gaveroche, Sara (racer and wizard), Suzanne (in 0.9). They are our references. Otherwise it's mainly, if you want a character do it yourself.

As I understand, you want us to make your mascot as a playable character in stk ? Now you might not realize it but making a new character is kinda hard and takes some time, especially if it's your first one. If we do your character it will be because one of our artist is interested or maybe (but that never happen) be paid to do it.

So your character is welcome, but it's not sure a SuperTuxKart artist will do it. It takes time and dedication to do a new character, so not sure what will happen :|.

I hope I answered to your questions. Btw we included not well known character in stk like Amanda, the Panda. Tux, gnu are probably the most popular, but they aren't the only ones.

Hello mfuhrmann and welcome!

I like your idea and I like the character very much.

If that should be the case, I would be very interested in modelling a kart for OpenNMS. Unfortunately I am very busy right now, which means that I could start working in mid-July at the earliest  .
So maybe someone else coud start earlier :)

User, you are probably not familiar with forums, but that's not how it works. You should not post something totally unrelated to the topic in any subforum.
Please create your own topic in the SuperTuxKart subforum. Also give more information than the call stack, like the hardware you are trying to run STK on, your operating system, etc.

Hey XGhost,

that sounds really good. Actually I don't have the permission to start this project. I'm just gathering information. Can you tell me, how to get the ball rolling?
Feel free to contact me via pn. I'm german, so it could be easier for us to communicate.
