It looks like you have (at least) three versions of irrlicht installed. Your configure reports:
{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
Irrlicht Engine version 1.6

It should actually be detected by configure that this irrlicht version is too old, but in your case it looks like one of the test program completely crashes (so the wrong version is not detected properly, which would happen in the next step of configure). I would suspect that your are compiling and linking with different versions of irrlicht - e.g. 1.6 headers, but you try to link with 1.7 (or 1.5*) libraries. Could you check your configuration - perhaps (if possible) remove the older versions.

Cheers,
Joerg

I removed all irrlicht versions, and installed ONLY 1.7.1.

{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
cat /usr/include/irrlicht/irrlicht.h | grep 1.7.1                                                                                             [15:35:36]

Hi,

well, we are making some progress - now at least we are getting linker messages ;) My suspicion is that your irrlicht version is not really 'stand alone'. You get several unresolved externals for png and jpg libs. Those can either be resolved by compiling irrlicht appropriately to use the internal versions, or via additional external libraries. My suspicion is that those libraries are missing, but I don't know a thing about gentoo to help you here.

Could you perhaps try to compile irrlicht from source yourself?

Cheers,

can you try something like

{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
./configure LDFLAGS="-lpng -ljpeg"

or so ( I assume since you use gentoo you must know a bit how things work ;) )
Unfortunately it's hard to make the autotools build system support all kinds of possible irrlicht installations out there :/

Thank you!

{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
./configure LDFLAGS="-lpng -ljpeg -lbz2"

works for me! Please, add it into your wiki!
P.S. I will try to write CMake Files for your project (I use CMake in my projects :))
