Young child mode?

Young child mode?

Postby timjohn » 18 May 2013, 09:02

My grandson is 5 years old and loves playing STK on Ubuntu with me. I steer while he accelerates and operates all weapons.
He's too young to play by himself, and I don't have the time to unlock all tracks in challenge mode.
So he stares at the locked tracks and gets completely frustrated at not being able to see them.
although he enjoys the competition, he loves just driving around the tracks.
Is it not possible to include a "Child Drivethrough" so that children can enjoy STK until they are old enough to race on their own?

I know what you are talking about ... I do the same with our kid (same age).

and I don't have the time to unlock all tracks in challenge mode.

Search for 'challenge.xml' here in this forum, and you will find ;)

But consider trying to win the challenges (on easy mode, there's no real disadvantage of using the simple mode) playing together. It's quite hard ;) you might have a lot of fun, and even see the end animation ;) Perhaps you might want to unlock one or two challenges, that are indeed pretty difficult in 'tandem' mode ;)

So he stares at the locked tracks and gets completely frustrated at not being able to see them.

In 0.8.1 we are planning to add an Easter Egg mode, in which you drive around (without opponents) and have to search for easter eggs ;)

Is it not possible to include a "Child Drivethrough" so that children can enjoy STK until they are old enough to race on their own?

Not sure about this. It's easy enough to unlock them, but if we add this to the game, many people will just use it, and the game will (appear to) offer a lot less playability - appear shorter. Many many games use locking in order to give some rewards to to the players.

Hope you can enjoy the new tracks!

I think Tim is implying that a Child Drivethrough mode wouldn't let you actually drive - just control acceleration and weapons. So maybe on Child Drivethrough you can select any track, but you can't actually drive it properly.

I like the idea of that, some assistance in the steering of a kid could do a lot.

Or the kart automaticaly accelerate and the player just have to turn left and right (something like in disneyland autopia) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRFZuvzHhW4) ;) (You can't hit the wall). So we have to use the drivelines to permit the kart to follow the road without help. And young player just have to avoid opponent and fire items.
