Mario Kart Source

I just discovered the now defunct Mario Kart Source project. They have released all their assets as open source (without a specific license). I am curious about two things.

They made a couple very nice karts.

If I can get them to put a real license to their work and if we reskinned it we could use it? It would need some work to function properly in the game, but that's really nice looking.

I know this for a long time. Sad that it's over but it was predictable.

Nice for license !
I think we also have to learn from their good interaction physics.

In my opinion, if you use their style kart with realistic palm trees as you want me to do, you'll really have a strange mix. ;D

I was following this project since many years ! ;( that's so sad.
I wanted (but i haven't enough time) to contact them to know if they want to help for STK.

jymis {l Wrote}:I think we also have to learn from their good interaction physics.

Their main problem was that they had problems with physics, they can't really play the game :o
But they are very very talented with modelling and visual art and i think they could really help us (With Stk universe of cource) but i don't think they know stk does exist
I think the last kart they create was original, unique and very beautiful (they did not appear in a MK game i think) so...a great opportunity for Stk (They don't want their work to be useless)
Antoine you should try to contact Killermapper on twitter or E-mail ;)

Ok so I downloaded the published files (models and source code).
Source code is useless to STK, so that's it.
Concerning models, I was very disappointed not to find the kart models, but only the tracks. Those are made with Valve Hammer Editor, which I can't run on my Linux box, and stored in its .vmf file format. No idea concerning compatibility with Blender, but anyway I was more interested in getting the kart models...
And I didn't see any licensing information.

This is weird they said: "This package contains all our files, including the sources, used for the Mod. Fell free to use them, it's open source. Put us into your credits ! Thanks. There is into the pack : - maps - models - sounds - materials - and more !"

My bad, this was an error from me: I tried to extract using some GUI tool (XFCE's Squeeze) and it blocked at some message prompted by "unrar"...(probably due to lower-case/upper-case file names handling).
Now I extracted it using the command line and am having a look at it.

There are some .obj files, but mostly .max files for the karts, so we need 3DS Max (maybe GMax would be enough?) to open those.

AFAIK 0 A.D. have used 3DS Max for some of its models, and they export as .obj to open in Blender.

Nice !

Yes I think that's the easiest way.
Note that there are already some exports in .obj format. I failed to import them in Blender but succeeded with Irrlicht's model viewer, albeit I didn't get it textured (but that's probably no big deal).

Reusing maps implies exporting from Hammer to Blender.
Maybe we can ask the original author to do so, if possible?

Well we need someone to pick up 3DS Max and try to export something to Blender, + people to help clarify the licenses (contacting the original author, he may help with the exporting thing as well maybe)

Those art assests are pretty good, you guys should snatch up whomever developed them.
