Remember This?

Remember This?

Postby Hero » 22 Nov 2012, 04:04

Lately I've decided that 0.6.2 of SuperTuxKart is taking up too much space on my disk. Though I regret doing it I've decided to delete it. Back then it was the best game I had and (IMO) the best game in the world. Now that version is definitely bad compared to 0.7.3 and 0.8. Now STK is still the best game for me and I must thank you again for making and improving it. Now why am I telling you this? Good question. Still, remember this?

I had the same sentiments about 0.4. I played 0.3 as well, but mostly just because I was bored and not because it was very enjoyable. But after 0.4 came about, I played STK a lot, and more and more because I wanted to, not only because I didn't have much else to do. Also, around that time I came in touch with hiker and Coz, which were really friendly and made me stay around. The rest, as we say, is history.

I played TuxKart before 0.3 as well, so I really feel like an old-timer.

I became involved with STK around 0.4/0.5.

When I look back I am struck by the fact that the tracks back then were, I'm sorry to say it, hideous.
Graphics-wise we have sure come a long way. The only drawback is that the newbees have a high standard to live up to and don't always understand why the answer is "no".

asciimonster, I couldn't have said it better myself. The same is true for weapons and other gameplay ideas - there is simply less and less good reasons to do major changes in terms of gameplay, and things that may seem good "on paper" are not always that much different or better than what we already have.

To be fare Old Mine wasn't that bad. In fact if more fits it's music then the new one. But remember the texture problem at the entrance of the tunnel in Northern Resort?

Why was there that side-ways zipper in Snow Tux Peak? I remember it in Tux Kart Geeko's Peak as well.

Most of that stuff is forgotten, but before 0.7, zippers had to be their own plane objects, so the texture was probably just rotated the wrong way, and when Geeko's Peak was remade into Snow Tux Peak the plane object was forgotten. Actually I seem to recall I reported that on the mailing list many eons ago, but we didn't really have any artists on the team back then so it stayed that way for a while.

With time, more and more smaller annoyances like that have been fixed, so patience really is the best way. :)
