Light Problem

Light Problem

Postby Vicojayn » 11 Oct 2012, 11:10

Dear SuperTuxKart team,

My name is Victor, i'm new with blender but making kart for SuperTuxKart is a good way to learn for me!
I'm actually making my own karts in blender. I just finish the texture with an UV Mapping, but in game the texture is too dark. Why?
I tried lots of thing, for instance i created a materials.xml file, with " light="Y/N" " When it's affected by lights, the kart is too dark and when it's not, it's too shiny. : /

Could you help me please? It's the same problem for my 4 karts!

uploading your kart(s) will help us solve anybody's problems, but all I can suggest right now is lighten your texture in GIMP or PS or something.
Some people are like slinkies... not really good for anything, but you still can't help smiling when you shove them down the stairs.

the only problems I see with this kart is that you can't see through the windshield and that the kart doesn't have a good shadow.
for the first one, add some transparency to your windshield texture and the set the image properties as in screenshot4 that is attached. For the second issue add a shadow texture in the kart properties.

Hi,

I haven't had the time to look closely but a few points I saw :

1) it's normal that thinkgs be sligthly darker in-game because shadows are applied. I would need to check more to see if what you show in the screenshot is really too dark
2) I see that many faces in your model have normals pointing in the wrong direction (open textured view in blender and you will see many faces "missing"). This will have a direct impact on lighting since shadows are applied according to the normal. If normals are incorrect then shadows may be applied incorrectly. (although in the blend it does look to me like some faces are missing at the back of the kart?)
3) I see the kart is scaled and rotated. I suggest you apply scale and rotation to the object, out exporter has a much easier time this way (especially if you get to animate it). I am not 100% sure if this can affect shadows, but it's worth trying and you will anyway need to do it eventually most probably

Thank you very much Auria!

You were right, my kart wasn't scaled and rotated! I had to apply these changes :-) Now my Kart is less dark and the shadows works correctly!

Have a nice day!

ah good to know. I am not sure if it's correct or not for a scaled kart to be lit incorrectly. This probably has to do with the scaling of the normals. Fortunately we know the way around this issue!
