My humble thoughts on 0.7.3

My humble thoughts on 0.7.3

Postby phildel » 20 Jan 2012, 20:57

I only discovered the supertuxkart recently after palying it for a couple of years. It's great to be able to download and try the older versions.
I was a bit too late to give thoughts on RC1 but here goes on the final version:
I am using Linux mint 11 Gnome 32bit

*The Grand Prix progress bar is listed vertically down the screen without any way to scroll through it. Is that just me? Quite pointless in this setup

*Hacienda...I miss the 3 nitros at the top of the ramp. I assume you realised you were making it too easy for us. :D

*Auto rescue kicks in too quickly after crashing into a wall, especially noticable and distracting in Snow peak. I can understand an automatic kick-in after going over a cliff or something, but not crashing into a wall.

*Muffins of Death dont seem to be as guided as before. Seem to be lobbed over karts a lot more than before.

*Fort Magma is now way too easy- Previous version was more enjoyable for me.

*Zen Garden: nice track but too mant presents makes it too chaotic.

*I dont like the bouncing ball at all - too random

*Subsea - current version too easy (even with the glare on my screen)

QUESTIONS:
Should I delete a particular file or files after using RC1 to notice more of a difference between RC1 and the final version. I notice that some karts I added on are in this version when I play it but dont know if that should be the case. I didnt have to complete challenges which suited me but am wondering if I am not seeing the "new" version because I was previously running RC1.

I assume I started with version 6 a couple of years back. I remember 1 track which consisted of driving through a living room and out into the garden. Anyone know of a still active Linux repo which may have this version of STK...or where else Icould get a chance to play it again?

Suggestions for the future:
Allow players to make their own Grand Prix by ticking or dragging tracks into their Grand Prix setup. Maye even include the same tracks more than once?

Highscores: include AI karts in the hiscore tables. After each race, show a high score table for that track and also have a seperate section in the main menu like "Stats" where this could show up.

Other stats: at the end of a GP, show a grid with the player's position in each race, and position in the league table after same race.

Save global stats per user like total races , races won, etc... you get the idea.

Cheers and keep up the good work.

hi,

first of all, thanks for you interest

I'm not sure what you mean; most GPs contain 4 tracks so you can see all tracks and there is no need to scroll through them.

phildel {l Wrote}: *Hacienda...I miss the 3 nitros at the top of the ramp. I assume you realised you were making it too easy for us. :D

exactly ;)

phildel {l Wrote}:*Auto rescue kicks in too quickly after crashing into a wall, especially noticable and distracting in Snow peak. I can understand an automatic kick-in after going over a cliff or something, but not crashing into a wall.

There is a ticket about this, I will let Joerg read this and consider it as a +1 request ;)
of course it's difficult to make code that correctly detects rescues at all times. One option would be to disable rescues on collisions and require the user to press the rescue button but many users don't seem to be aware of this button

phildel {l Wrote}:*Muffins of Death dont seem to be as guided as before. Seem to be lobbed over karts a lot more than before.

Hmm I haven't noticed this, what do other people here think?

phildel {l Wrote}:*Fort Magma is now way too easy- Previous version was more enjoyable for me.

we might want to revisit it, but it's very very hard to get the right difficulty level, MANY people were totally unable to drive on the old version

phildel {l Wrote}:*Zen Garden: nice track but too mant presents makes it too chaotic.

Hmm you're the first to report this :)

phildel {l Wrote}:*I dont like the bouncing ball at all - too random

Can you clarify what you mean by random?

phildel {l Wrote}:*Subsea - current version too easy (even with the glare on my screen)

We need easy tracks too :)

Removing the old version could help making sure you don't have old leftover files. But as you found, generally this won't have bad consequences, you may just end up with some old material that we removed but you kept.

I am not sure which track you are referring to, but you can find older versions at https://sourceforge.net/projects/supertuxkart/files/

hmm maybe but not a priority :) it's reasonably easy to create your own GPs by editing the data files

Not sure

Could be interesting, but we have a lot to do so this won't be a priority :)

same answer as previous ;)

Thanks for the feedback and the nice words

I sometimes have the feeling that this is true, but tbh I like it more this way. Especially in Three Strikes Battle mode, the cake was really overpowered in 0.6, which seems slightly better to me in 0.7. Only my opinion, though.

Isn't that what's the add-on server is for?
phildel, you might want to download "Hardcore Fort Magma" (0.6 version) and/or "Another Fort Magma" (0.7.1 version, I think) from the add-ons menu.

I think the muffins are fine

Same thing for bouncing ball, a lot better than the anchor.

Thanks for the replies, people.

some clarifications/ responses:

*The Grand Prix progress bar is listed vertically down the screen without any way to scroll through it. Is that just me? Quite pointless in this setup
I'm not sure what you mean; most GPs contain 4 tracks so you can see all tracks and there is no need to scroll through them.

This was in the all-tracks grand prix. Im in the wrong distro at the mo to look at the shorter ones.

*Zen Garden: nice track but too mant presents makes it too chaotic.

Hmm you're the first to report this :)

Just my opinion. Cant seem to settle into the race witout being hit by something or other.

That's great . I will have a look, see what I can do. That also answers my fort magma question :)

I hadnt realised the anchor was gone. Bouncing ball makes more sense now.

My hypothesis is that since general game speed has gone a little up since the 0.6 series, the cake misses a bit more often than before. Which is OK to me: it's generally over 90% effective anyway.

Can you tell me where the add-ons are saved?
I was looking to create my own grand prix by...I assume... copying the add-on track folders into the main track folder and then amending the all tracks grand prix file.
Cant find the add-on tracks at all.
Searched for "industry" for example and nothing came up.
Thanks in advance

update to last post.
I simply added track Industry to the all tracks list and it was included in the GP so I assume I dont need to copy folders.
On the other hand I tried to add The Cube and classic subsea and they were not found.
Is it that I dont know the correct names to include?

Yeah, that's quite likely.
Add-ons are located in ~/.local/share/supertuxkart/addons if you're using Linux; not sure about the other operating systems. (Couldn't seem to find this info on the wiki; IMO it should be added.)
Once there, you can look at the folder names for how to reference them in a GP or challenge file.

Alternatively, issue supertuxkart --list-tracks - unfortuantely, this feature seems to be broken? At least that's the case for the development version. Anyhow, you should be able to use folder names as mentioned for add-on tracks.

Well done, Arthur. That's me sorted!

supertuxkart --list-tracks only lists the "official" tracks but you were right in that I could get the names of hte other track in /.local/share/supertuxkart/addons.
Idont know why tat didnt come up in a file search , even with "show hidden files".

So now I have my own alltracks GP set up... which gives me an idea for a therad...
