Graphical (texture) Corruption on FGLRX Drivers

Googling finds no-one else experiencing something like this so it may be a driver issue as opposed to an issue with STK, but this is more a "has anyone else seen this before" question than a request to fix it.

I'm getting randon graphical corruption that gets worse the more I play. i.e. when I start the game it's fine, then as I'm playing a track things will start to corrupt such as the racer icons and my own kart texture, then at the end of the race all the text will be garbage. When I go back go the menu all the text will be garbage and some of the icons.

Quitting the game and going back in fixes all the textures, until I start to race again.

All other Linux native games I have tried all work fine without any corruption. Now when I say corruption, it's not the original texture becoming corrupted, it's as if it's using random textures from the video card's RAM as icons and such all take on random bits of appearance from other textures, as if everything is being randomized.

Machine is a Lenovo Ideapad S205 using a RadeonHD 6310. Game is 0.7-1 and Catalyst 11.6.

Card info is:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 6300 series Graphics
OpenGL version string: 4.1.10834 Compatibility Profile Context

Hi,

how much GPU memory do you have? I wonder if this might be caused by a lack of GPU memory

It maybe worth trying STK 0.7.2, because 0.7.2 is much better at freeing unused memory, so if this is the problem it may be better with 0.7.2

I'm not 100% sure with the RadeonHD 6310, but as far as I know it will use a minimum of 384MB RAM and allocate up to 1GB automatically (system has 8GB).
A friend tried it the other day on his Atom (N450) which has a GMA3150 and that worked without any graphical corruption (although very slowly).

Unfortunately 0.7.2 isn't in Arch's repos yet (probably because it's only an RC) but I'll try it when it comes out as a full release.

Well I was going to try the RC but I can't install it because it claims I need to upgrade irrlicht past the latest version that is actually available and I don't really feel like going behind my package managers back at the moment to replace dependencies so I'll have to leave it for now.

I'm not sure if that's required, but personally I'm compiling against an SVN trunk version of Irrlicht. You don't need to install anything, just put this somewhere in your home directory.
The supertuxkart executable can be executed from its "src" subdirectory.

It's irrlicht that I would have to install, configure fails unless it's the trunk version. So getting to the STK install point is moot :/

Hi,

check http://supertuxkart.sourceforge.net/Downloads , there are static self-contained packages for Linux (download-and-run binaries that don't require to compile anything), maybe they will work on your computer

Yeah, if you just want to test the game, go with the static packages. If you're interested in the development of SuperTuxKart, I am sure we could help you get trunk working on your machine. :)

Hello Enverex, I used to have the same problem you have. Updating to the latest version of fglrx (8.872, catalyst 11.7) and using stk 0.72 resolved the problem.
