No-violent option for STK

No-violent option for STK

Postby mjminfo » 26 Jun 2011, 17:56

PLease may we have a startup option to disable all violent options in stk ???

think about young people who would like to enjoy a nice racing game without violence !

I know that there is no blood, but bombs, cakes explosions, bowling balls hits, etc ...

Yes I know that there is a mode where you can eliminate all powerups/etc , but it would be fun to still have the plunger/gum/nitro and/or any other that is non violent ( hopefully in the near future!) ?

any chance that stk can be started as such : supertuxkart --nonviolent

thanks

jorge

PS I mention this as I've had some feedback from some parents who found that it's a bit violent and they asked if it was possible to change this options at the start of the game ( so they could create an icon/starter for non-violent and another for normal depending on the age level who will be playing. Also they will be able to use parent control software to enable which version is available to which user.

You can edit file data/powerup.xml, and in the table at bottom tweak the values of cakes and bowling balls to 0

so far I don't think we have any plan to offer a game mode that is sanitized of very mild violence like cakes

No disrespect, but I think people who find STK "violent" does exaggerate a little, no ?
Would we stop a child from seeing some Tom & Jerry cartoon just because during the whole thing, Tom tries to kill Jerry ?

Troll appart, I think it would be difficult to offer a similar gameplay, but without "violent" weapons, as they are inherent part of the game.

Hi,

note: I moved this posting and the answer into a separate thread.

Somehow I can't help myself thinking that this statement should actually be: "think about parents who would like their kids to enjoy a nice racing game without violence" ;)

And what about parents who don't want their kids to learn to drop chewing gum on the floor? And a plunger in the nose might give you nose bleeding, or suffocate you. Throwing an anchor at someone is certainly not a good idea either. If we added a --no-violence option or so, we might upset a lot of people because we wouldn't fulfill their expectations about what no-violence is.

I am not trying to make fun here, it's just that this is a very subjective issue, and I am not at all interested in starting a discussion on what items might be violent or not. Additionally, removing item would impact the game balance (while admittedly STK is not yet matured in terms of items, there is a need for items that allow players behind to catch up, and most of them are what you would consider violent). And impacting the game balance would result in a (potentially) very different game (and imho a much worse game).

If you have any suggestions on how to replace items, please go ahead (and ideally provide us with the models).

Otherwise: Auria has pointed out how you can remove items in your copy.

Cheers,
Joerg

I gotta agree. You have games like Diddy Kong racing that has missiles and rockets, and that does not provoke violent behaviours in children that I know of. If I recall this is also a cartoon them game, by that I mean the models don't look realistic. I highly doubt a child is going to take a cupcake or a bowling ball (he probably couldn't even lift it up) and throw it at someone and say, "I saw a penguin do it in STK!". No disrespect, but this isn't Grand Theft Auto. :(

I see what you mean, man but STK would be really dull with that kind of thing. Seriously, if someone doesn't want those power ups, just because a cartoon kart got flipped over by a cupcake ofnall things, that just destroys games. :)
