Default add-ons

I miss The Green Valley. I miss Coyote Canyon. I miss the horrible Blackhill Mansion, because it was so much fun to play it online in reverse.
Yes, I can still play these tracks as add-ons, but I can NEVER play them on global online servers. Why? Because people don't have add-ons installed. And it's too much trouble to tell them to install these particular add-ons and come back to the server. And even if they do, they don't know the tracks so they don't drive them well.

Would it be possible to have a default set of add-ons that's ALWAYS installed with STK but that just isn't used in the story mode and the tracks simply get added to add-ons by default? That way, the set of tracks available for global online would grow and some tracks that are facing deprecation because they don't look good but they are great fun to play online could still be ubiquitously available. I mean tracks like The Green Valley, The Snow Peak (facing deprecation), Shifting Sands, etc.

What do you think, manic drivers?

Maybe in the future there could be a feature where you can require people to have certain add-ons before joining your server? And if a player doesn't have them there could be a button that would automatically download the ones they needed?

That would be very nice!
Still, I think that some default add-ons would be useful to increase the number of tracks that everybody has.

This sounds good to me. It's hard to get people to download add-ons once in a session, then one person joins who has none.

Usually files downloaded from servers go into some cache so they can stay on the drive so you don't have to download them again.

You could do like OpenArena, and make an option for a "pure server", where the files have to be the same for the clients as on the server. With OA, there is an optional automatic download function, that can be set up, so people connecting will automatically download additional needed files. Could be from an FTP server, web hosting, what have you, from the server.

For now, you could create a server dedicated to add-on tracks. Use the welcome message for instructions and a list of “must-have add-ons”.

My personal must-have list would have at least all tracks that were official before and Lost Chasm.

I support this idea, but I wonder if language barriers is an issue (eg. a player who does not understand much english may not realize the server requires add-ons and may be confused and annoyed that they keep getting kicked before games)

The strings in the feature explaining it should be translatable like all other UI strings. The STK server could serve the English string and the STK client translate it. Problem solved ;)

By the time you start getting into the code, may as well just implement auto-downloading of the addons.

no, stk won't auto-download addons without user knowing

Yes, there should always be some form of user confirmation, at least.
It would not be good if someone is able to insert a malicious add-on and make people automatically download it!
