Minimal Intel Graphics Card ?

Minimal Intel Graphics Card ?

Postby zezinho » 07 Jan 2013, 15:52

hi, supertuxkart is now fantastic with the story mode. Thanks for the hard work.
So now, my son wants to play it (till 0.7.3 he did not), but his computer has an Intel i915.
While on more recent Intel I get more than 60 fps in graphics level 1, with this card STK drops to 10fps!

In the same hardware, Quake III Arena is over 50 fps at HIGH quality so I wonder : is there a know trick (lower res textures?) to get higher speeds, or can't I expect decent frame rate on OpenGL 1.4 hardware?

I suppose you are already using graphics level 1 on this PC too?
Are you sure your Intel chipset is not in some low power consumption mode?
Do you have similar perf problems with an older version of STK?
Which OS are you using?
Do you use the latest drivers?
Did you try at a low resolution? fullscreen or windowed?

Although it seems probable, we can't be sure the bottleneck in your case is the GPU, it would be interesting to profile STK on such hardware...can you try a ridiculous resolution like 320x240 or 160x120 to see if the GPU is the guilty? (try changing these values in config.xml)

To be honest I don't think there will be an easy and quick way to get the current version to run STK faster on this system but I'd like to know the reason for such low FPS so someone could try to tackle the problem, if possible :)

Sorry, I spoke tto fast : the framerate in basic levels is more around 25/30fps at 800x600 and level1. But the game play was choppy, like if there were much less fps.
Toying with maxfps option I made it somewhat better : maxfps=30 looks good in this Intel GM45, with Mageia Linux 2.

Is it possible that you are experiencing the 'camera not moving smoothly' problem, which is more likely to occur with lower frame rates? I.e. does it appear that the camera is moving backwards/forwards? If so, that's a known bug in STK (https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/supertuxkart/ticket/2).

Cheers,
