Boost after skidding

Boost after skidding

Postby STKRudy85 » 25 Sep 2012, 23:12

Hello,

I tried today nighly build of STK ( I never played the game since 0.7.3 ) I like parts of the new driving physic (bumping walls is cool).

I dislike AI collision (to important) and more I can't drive golf track (at max speed) especially because of the boost after skidding.
Is it possible to disable it (for myself)
( For everyone, maybe you should render it more difficult to activate ? )
[eg in Mario kart to have this kind of boost you have to charge it, changing direction (2 times) during skidding]

I'm really sorry to be the angry troll , but I didn't do it last time I spoke about gameplay, and I didn't be listened seriously :
Actually I spend my little free time playing games.

I stopped since I started using linux ( And you  ? )

I'm a player before being everything else (eg today as every day since few month I saw starcraft games on youtube I played a match vs AI, and I watched "nolife" a french video games TV ) This the only things I done - > I don't read Manga, comics or watching series or movies ... today
Games are the a great part of my life.
I'm 33 years old I started playing on Master System when I had 10 . I played Mario kart on any platforms I played crash team racing, street racer, and so many racing games.

So please hear me when I take the time of writing words about supertuxkart playability
I'm not the only one who have a gamer's past
But don't tell me that I'm wrong when I spend time reporting bad driving feelings

... I thing sometimes, you are so focus on supertuxkart that you're not objective. Do you have time to play on other games ?

Except this gaming detail ( and maybe other ) STK's team are really doing a great job as they always do.
I hope joining you with diligence.

With this you mean kart-kart collisions? This is certainly not perfect. I want to get the effect that if you are faster than the other kart you can push it our of your way, but atm it's just too strong. I'll work on this once the skidding and (related to that) camera works as expected.

and more I can't drive golf track (at max speed) especially because of the boost after skidding.

Minigolf is probably the most difficult track in STK, and is certainly not intended to be driven at max speed. You need to brake in at least some of the tighter curves.

Is it possible to disable it (for myself)

You can tweak the config file to your liking of course. Have a look at it, it should contain enough information to get you started.

I am not sure which MK you are talking of. In Mario Kart Wii you certainly only have to skid in one direction, no need to change direction at all. And I actually shortened the time before the boost becomes active based on Mario Kart Wii. So perhaps I just don't understand what you are saying.

Yes, I do have time to player other games, but I am the first one to admit that I am not objective ;) At the same time I doubt anyone can be objective when talking of what they like ... it's by its very nature a subjective thing ;)

Having said that, we are planning an alpha release to get more feedback. I have been using and tweaking and learning and tweaking and using and ... the new skidding for months by now. I am certainly aware that it takes some time to get used to. Judging when to skid, how long etc. takes some time, esp. since long-time player of STK will have the additional problem of unlearning to use skidding as a sharp turn key. It helps you taking certain curves quicker, but not the way the sharp key worked. We have to see how we can ease people into that ... perhaps a tutorial, but that might postpone a release even more :(

My biggest problems with skidding (tested with nightly 11635):
- you can't correct any more while being in a corner
- if the corner has more than 90°, it *will* boost you into the outside wall.
- the good old 'sharp turn' to drive around corners to tight for the karts is lost
and the worst: the AI handles the skidding perfectly (even in corners where I thing it can't work) and so overtakes you on the next straight, if you don't use it too.

Because of that I'm back to 11511 (a version without skidding).

The above post sums it up pretty well. Skidding activates way too easily and the AI has a huge advantage with it. It doesn't even feel like the same game anymore. I went back to 0.7.3.

for now please disregard the AI. It will definitely be tuned before a released so that it's not so ridiculously good at skidding

I am not sure what you mean here: do you mean getting stuck?

- if the corner has more than 90°, it *will* boost you into the outside wall.

True enough - that's the skill part of skidding - though you might be able to use braking (with skidding) here ;)

- the good old 'sharp turn' to drive around corners to tight for the karts is lost

Use brake instead, that gives you a sharp turn. Yes, it's a change to game play, but honestly: we only introduced sharp turn because it was a cheap way of fixing our turning behaviour, which we didn't get right at that time (and give at least the look of STK having some kind of skidding.

and the worst: the AI handles the skidding perfectly (even in corners where I thing it can't work) and so overtakes you on the next straight, if you don't use it too.

As auria has written: the AI will be tweaked - sometimes it's pretty stupid (it had an endless rescue loop in the corners of the castle in Fort Magma), but it has indeed improved quite a bit (wasn't that what people complained about before? That the AI was too easy?) ;)

What about a disable button next to each button in the controller menu of options. Then you could disable skidding, get used to not pressing the button, and then easily (and with out grief) learn how to use the skidding. If you just learn how to do skidding you will still often attempt to use it as Sharp Turn and end up in the dust.

You can also use the disable to try playing without firing, using nitro or something else. You can't make a mode for everything. But this feature could help.

Potentially the disable button would just put the controls onto FKeys. This may make it easier to create this feature.
