why were maps removed in 0.7?

why were maps removed in 0.7?

Postby Mr. Dyson » 15 Aug 2011, 08:45

Why did we have to take away lots of the maps when version 0.7 came out. Here are some tracks to remember from the older versions. On The Beach, Race Track, Art Museum, Doing Dishes, Growns Bow, Geeko Peek and Little Volcano. I know there are more old tracks then this, but those were only some of them. Where are some of the old karts like Evil Tux and Penny. All of the old tracks that did not make it to version 0.7 should be addons, EVEN THE REALLY OLD ONES!!!!! There is no need to downgrade Supertuxkart by taking away so many of the tracks.

Not all of those tracks were in the game already; at least Art Museum and Doing Dishes has always been addons. Furthermore, we have gotten new and better maps to replace the others. E.g. Geeko Peak were changed to become Snow Peak. And Little Volcano and Doing Dishes are already addons (the latter is not approved yet, due to one unclarified license issue) .

As to why they aren't addons yet, it's because the track and kart file format were changed, requiring some changes to the tracks at least. People are free to fix them up, export with the new exporter and upload as addons, but this is not the priority of the developers as they are no longer in the game by default. I have preserved a couple of tracks I loved to play, but some of the old tracks... well, they frankly stinked. :p
Hey pal, I took an oath for justice! "In happy days or tightest tights..." or something like that.

Little Volcano is actually still in STK, it's just now become "Crescent Crossing". The look is different but it's the same road :)

On The Beach, Growns Bow and Geeko Peek were IMO very inferior in quality to what we currently have. If anyone wants to revive them and port them to STK 0.7, however, we will gladly accept them into stkaddons.net

And as Arthur mentioned, Art Museum and Doing the Dishes were never in STK

There are several answers: besides the obvious one that we didn't have enough people porting tracks, there is also the issue about quality over quantity. And many of the tracks you have mentioned had severe problems (i.e. too many shortcuts, too boring); and some were replaced with much better looking versions. Also, some of them have already been ported and are available from the addon web page.

I doubt that the STK was downgraded at all. The number of tracks/karts is no sign of the quality of a game. Besides if you miss any particular track or kart: the models should be in our media repository; download them, convert them following the instruction on the wiki, and upload them to the addon website.

Cheers,
